He is constantly biting, we have tried holding his mouth and saying no, weve tried the water bottle, we have tried ignoring him and re directing him to other toys. He wont stop! What should i do now?
Jack Russells are a highly active breed and get bored easily. He needs lots of exercise and mental stimulation.
First he is the boss and knows it! Laugh, this happens a lot.
First line of action is to start walking him for about 2 hrs twice daily if possible. If that much time is not possible get a dog vest with pockets and this will give your dog more weight to carry and a better work out but do not overload him because he is just a pup yet. You can add weight with very small water bottles/ or something similar if he still needs to burn more energy. Another option is a small treadmill to get his exercise.
Now the walk is important to take back control of leader position. You should go out the door first and he should follow and the same going back in your house. Don’t make a big deal about leaving. He should be calm and come to you to go.
When walking he should be right at your left side. No sniffing, walking in front of you, no pulling this way and that. Shorten the leash and keep him at your side. If he pulls give a light quick correction by pulling sideways not back. This throws him slightly off balance and gets him to look at you or at least his attention. If that does not work give his side a light tap with your foot. Dogs respond better to different places on their bodys so if one spot does not work try another. Now just a tap. Your dog will get better as you go or maybe he is already got this down. It is hard to know all by your question. This though is part of the answer to his behavior problems.
It is nice to stop at a park or nice area where he can just play. Tell him its time to play and let him sniff around and see new things to stimulate his mind. This could be in the middle of your walk so you can rest also. Walking different routes is important so that your walk does not become routine or boring.
Does he behave in other areas? Does he know basic training? Also this is the best time to get him an appointment to be neutered. He does not need any more male hormone running through his body! He will be less prone to cancer and less likely to want to run off when their is a female in heat. I would also get him micro-chipped if he is not. People are out their stealing dogs all the time for pit bait….to resell to science labs or just to resell for the money.
Get Ceasar Millan’s books and start training your dog to accomplish these things. They all have to do with leadership and training an awesome companion for life. Your dog will be well balanced and your family and others will like to be around him.
When does he bite? Just out of the blue, to get a toy, around his food? These answer would help me know why he is biting.
At four months pups learn that they can have some control and I call it their wild age. This is the perfect time for training though if that is any comfort. When he comes up to you and bites lay him on his side and have him lay there till he calms down and relaxes and stays when you remove your hand. This is very important not to give in. If he is biting wear gloves or gently but firmily also hold his head down. Make sure you are perfectly calm and ok with this. A dog picks up your feelings like a magnet. If you are upset, angery or frustrated remove him from the room and crate him.
Now if your JKR calms down and takes a deep breath you have gained back your leadership and it is the perfect time to reward him with a favorite treat and some loving. If he bites again start all over. He will get it. If he will not submitt kennel him everytime he bites you or anyone else. When he stops barking let him out and try it again.
Teach him toys are for biting by making it a fun game. Stimulate his mind by hiding treats around the house and give the game a name and he will start looking forward to it. We use to hide each other when we were kids, lol. Our dog loved it.
The main thing is his excitment level. It needs to be low or he is not listening at all. That is why the exercise is so important and should be done before any other training. Try to catch him before he gets to wound up. When a dog is hyper he is not happy and neither is your family.
Another great thing is to socialize him with other dogs/puppies and he will learn from them. This is a very important age to learn. The older he gets the more bad habits he has. When playing with the other dogs he burns energy, learn appropriate dog pack behavior and gets mental stimulation and should be tired and go to sleep when he gets home.
I would not take him to a dog park as there are a lot of dogs there who are untrained and may give him more bad habits. He could also get hurt because of his biting behavior. You have no idea what these dogs are like.
Try to meet friends with well behaved dogs or contact the nearest Parson Russell dog club or a dog play group.
Good luck and visit Ceasar Millan’s site to purchase his training books and tapes as more then likely things will pop up later and you

My dog was like that, what we did was get a trainer. What she did was whenever he would bite she would walk into him to push him back. Then once he would bite again she would do the same thing. Then he got the idea. We just had to keep the training for a few days and he learned.

I can only think of two things to help.
1.) Every time your dog bites he/she is out of the room, put it behind a door or gate for at least 3 min. after a while it should get the idea.
2.) If not do what cesar millan does take to fingures and firmly press it against your dogs neck and lay it down on the ground this way your showing the dog your the leader and he can’t do anything without your permission.
I use Cesar Millans methods alot on my youngest do, she rarely bites now, and it even works with barking to.

Even though Parson Russell Terriers look like cute little dogs they are very stubborn and strong willed. They have to have a firm hand just like a bigger dog i.e Rottie,German Sheppard etc. Buy him kongs and fill them with treats and peanut butter. Don’t play tug of war with him because he thinks he can bite you like he would another dog. Dont rough play with your hands in his mouth because he will think it is okay to bite. I have 3 JRTs and we trained them ourselves from puppies this way, none of them bite us now or ever growl at us. They are very loving dogs but as I said they need a firm hand from very young.
