Both of my JRT's are 1-2 years old and get a reasonable amount of exericse each day, but both are gaining too much weight. They have been eating IAMS lamb and rice almost exclusively since they were pups.
I am the wrong one to ask.. I think that Eukaneuba is the best dog food for ANY dog.

i give my jackrussel purina puppy chow, (obviously she is still a puppy) it doesnt upset her stomach and she is very picky about her food and with the puppy chow she licks her bowl clean! its also kinda moist and i think she likes that.

No such dog as a Jack Russell. The name was changed to Parson Russell about 3 years ago. Feed any adult food of good quality if dog is over 1 year less than 1 puppy food should be fed. visit "dog food ratings" web sight, for the top rated foods for dogs

I have a boxer and a Yorkie; Tia and Makenzie. They are the loves of my life I feed them Natural Choice Dog food. It's a little more expensive but they are worth it. My vet has also said no raw hide because it is hard to digest so they get knuckle bones, hard to find ones small enough for Makenzie but we make do. Petco sells both, good luck and enjoy your new friend!

Iams is a really bad food. I feed my Jack Russell Natural Balance. I get it at petsmart. Check the ingredient label. Avoid anything with "by-product" in the ingredients. As for the weight issue, as long as your dogs are getting enough exercise they should not be gaining weight. I know it sounds harsh but you have been feeding them too much. They should eat between 1/4 and 1/2 cups of food a day. That's it. You need to gradually reduce their food. Natural Balance makes and diet food too and that should help. When my Jack was loosing weight I gave her canned green beans to fill up her tummy. But when she got to a good weight I took her off the green beans and she is only just plain food now. You might even keep them on the diet food all the time if they gain weight easily.
Just for every ones info there is such thing as a Jack Russell. Just because the name was changes doesn't mean we have to call it a "Parson" all the time.
