I want to get a Jack russel terrier. But my mom has some concerns.
1. Are they good with cats?
2. Are they excited a lot of the time?
3. How will they behave during walks?
4.How fast do they run?
5. Are they friendly most of the time?
I would REALLY appreciate an answer from someone experienced with Jack russel terriers. Be honest please because I really want this dog.

To be honest I would never ever own one. They are hyper and crazy little hard headed dogs. Like daschunds on crack! Your mom is right to pass on this breed.

1. Any dog can be great with cats if raised with them. So, I would get a puppy so you can raise it with your cats.
2. Depends on the dog. I have seen mellow Jack Russels and hyper ones. Depends on the breeder you get your puppy from. I have heard most Jack Russels are pretty hyper though.
3. Good if well trained.
4. I don't know.
5. Yes, Jack Russels are very friendly if well socialized.

All of these questions depend on the individual dog–its training, its breeding (as in, if it is a well-bred dog or poorly-bred), and its own personality.
It is also up to the owner, such as "being good with cats." If you don't put any training into the animal, it will most likely not magically get along with cats.
You can't make blanket statements for a breed. Just because it looks the same as another dog of the same breed does not mean that it acts the same way.

This terrier has bounds of energy, therefore should be exercised daily. His unique personality makes him desirable to many, but city or apartment dwelling as well as a sedate lifestyle hinder the dogs needs,
Because they were used as a hunting dog they run fast for short periods, can be aggressive towards other dogs, cats, small mammals and birds. Any dog will behave on a walk if trained. They are happy, bold, somewhat fearless with a surprisingly gentle and kind nature.

1. If they are brought up with cats then yes usually.
2. They are a very high energy breed. If they do not get an adequate amount of exercise, then yes they will be excited a lot. But if they receive the exercise and attention they need, then they will be fine
3. Depends on how you train them, any dog can be amazing or horrible on walks. It's not really the breed that decides that, it's the owner.
4. They are very quick little dogs
5. Usually they are very friendly, but again this is a matter of attention, exercise and socialization. A dog (any breed) that is not given enough attention can become withdrawn and "not friendly"
They are great little dogs, but they need their exercise

I hate Jack Russell terriers. My daughter and my friend each have one. They are excited most of the time, extremely fast and always try to sneak out of the gate then run like a rabbit. They are not good with other dogs so I'd assume they are not good with cats. My daughter and my friend live miles apart but say they don't walk their dogs, because as soon as they see another dog, their dog goes so nutty they have to pick it up to walk by. I have 3 Shih Tzu's and took them to my daughters once and to my friends yard once. Never again. Thank God I had my dogs on a leash so I could scoop the 3 of them up in my arms because as soon as we entered the gate at each of their homes, the Jack Russell squirmed out of my friends arms and tried to attach my dogs. The same thing happened at my daughters house. I hope you change your mind.

1. Are they good with cats?—– Not really, but it depends on the dog.
2. Are they excited a lot of the time?— ALWAYS! especially with company.
3. How will they behave during walks?— they like to pull, and unless trained will take you for a walk.
4.How fast do they run?—- REALLY FAST, catching one is hard if they get loose.
5. Are they friendly most of the time?—- Yeah, they are protective of their family.
They need a lot of running space and they are not indoor dogs. They need obedience training, and once they are trained they are the best dogs in the world!

1. That is specific to an individual dog and often how they are introduced to the cat or if they are raised with the cat.
2. Yes. JRT's are incredibly hyper. There are always exceptions to the rule, but their nature as a breed is to have tons of energy…it's expected.
3. It depends solely on your training with them. If you consistently leash train them from the day you get them, they will be fine. They like to hunt small prey so do like to make a mad dash if they see a critter, so you would really have to put effort into leash training.
4. They can run quite fast. They can outrun you; they can turn and dart very quickly and be quite cagey to catch. They also don't get winded easily. It is bred into their nature to be tenacious.
5. Mostly; again, this can be more dog dependent and how it is raised than breed dependent. They can by nippy.
If this is you and your mom's first dog, you might want to rethink this breed. It is not a good beginner's breed. It takes a lot of time, energy and commitment. They are very smart and need a lot of activity to spur their mind or bodies. Chances are good that if you get this breed and do not put in a lot of time and energy into training, you will find yourself finding the dog a new home in about 4-6 months (if you make it that long), because you can easily end up with a destructive dog that appears to have no redeeming qualities. If, however, you are consistent with training and patient and have a lot of time and energy to commit, you will find yourself with a great, adaptable, intelligent and loyal pet.

Avoid these bast@rdly little dogs.
1. Does your cat like to be chased? IF so then yes they are good with cats, until they catch them…
2. Yes, yes unless you exercise them
3. They need to be run, they are active little dogs, and need exercise like a crack whore needs crack., if you don't have either a big yard to run them or walk/run them often you will find home destruction at your every turn
4. How fast do you run, double that and you have JRT speed.
5. They are friendly, unless you have a territorial JRT, a unsocialized JRT
I wouldn't get a JRT if I were able to store it at someone else's home.
I'd find a less temperamental and easy breed: pug, schnauzer, affen pinscher, mini pin, brussels griffon…
I have not had a JRT but have had several friends who have one. I've had several breeds. Two that I would recommend over any other is the Affen Pinscher and the Mini Schnauzer, both are even tempered loving cuddly dogs that are highly intelligent and trainable, not to mention fun.
The smaller breeds can be difficult to train, I'd suggest getting an older dog and not a puppy unless you have a lot of time.

1. yes, usually. if they grew up with them.
2. if they get good exercise, no. they need exercise since they were bred to hunt and be active.
3. If they're well trained, yes. If they see a small rodent, they may act up; but training will prevent this to some degree.
4. Quite fast. They were bred to hunt rodents, so they had to be fast.
5. mostly, yes. you can't guarantee a temperament unless you get one from a breeder.

1. Are they good with cats?
Not usually. The majority of them have a hunting instinct that is fairly strong. Some, if raised with cats, may be ok with them. But remember, these dogs were bred to
2. Are they excited a lot of the time?
Hyper you mean? Most of the time. Lots of exercise can partially cure this, if you consider it a problem.
3. How will they behave during walks?
It depends on how well you trained them.
4.How fast do they run?
They can run pretty dern fast.
5. Are they friendly most of the time?
The majority of them. Depends on breeder and socialization.
