Training Jack Russells

Are Jack Russell Terriers okay for beginners?

I do have some experiance with training(i watch a lot of animal plant). i'm trying to convince my mom to get a dog but she won't get a big one. So I narrowed my choices down to a Jack, and a Beagel. <–but they are more for experienced owners. buttt, we have never had a dog.

Jack Russells are hyper and tend to bark a lot. Beagle's bay (howl) which can be annoying. My suggestion is to do a lot of reading about owning/raising/training a dog, then go to your local animal shelter and give a shelter puppy a new home. Both of my dogs are from shelters and they are fabulous!

The beagle is more of a family dog.. Easy to train in my eyes as I have a 14 year old female
THe jack Russell is a very smart breed but has alot of energy
It all depends on the amount of time you can devote to them
Dogs take alot of care and patience

I'd say a jack russel was a good beginner dog, they have a high prey drive and will literaly play 'fetch' till it kills them so dont over do it in summer.

seeing as i got a nagative rating for this warning i just want to add

Jack Russell Terrier is most definitely not a good dog for a beginner. They are very active (verging on hyperactive), very intelligent, very stubborn and can have a high prey drive. Terriers are almost never a good idea for a newbie to dogs, especially a kid. A Beagle would be a much better choice. They are often good beginner dogs - especially for kids. Be warned though Beagles are VERY hardheaded and tend to listen to their nose more than you.

Why not go to your local animal shelter and adopt a homeless dog. These two are probably not a good choice for an inexperienced dog owner. I really doubt that a reputable breeder would sell you one of these breeds.

Jacks are very energetic and need exercise , the beagle is more of a family dog but be aware of their prey drive i thought myself they were easy for beginners , they will always try killing small animals which can get irritating i would say jack russell

oooo…. a Jack Russell, though small, is a lotta dog. Very high energy and needs alot of time and attention- Unless they get the proper exercise and stimulation, they can be very destructive. Make sure you really research the breeds, maybe visit a local dog park in hopes of meeting some of each- that way you can really see first hand what they are like. As you know, owning a dog is a huge commitment and you want to make sure you get a breed that you are realistically able to handle IE: time and attention training and exercising. Also, you want to consider the level of barking the breed is known for. Beagles and Jack Russells are both very vocal dogs. However, with the right amount of training and exercise both dogs would make a great companion.
For your reference I have included some links to the AKC website that will help in your research-
    Good Luck!

Jacks are usually not a beginner's dog. I've helped raise my friend's jack and he's the most difficult and stubborn (but fun!) dog I've ever come across - and I'm not a beginner. He was even kicked out of obedience class for being too disobedient! He's incredibly smart and learns commands quickly, but then only obeys the commands if he sees a reason to! Jacks are also very hyperactive dogs and they demand lots of attention. They think they are big dogs and won't hesitate to get in the face of a big dog, which, even if they're being playful, isn't the smartest thing to do. They're also jumpers - the one I take care of can jump almost five feet up to get something. Personally, I love jacks and I wouldn't trade this one for the world, but they're not for everyone. The Russell Rescue Group has a great page you should read that gives the worst case scenario of owning a jack. Ultimately, it will come down to your personality, but if by a beginner's dog you mean a low maintenance dog, then the jack is not for you. Here's the webpage you should read: http://www.russellrescue.com/baddog.php4
