Someone gave us a puppy in May, and our vet at first thought it was a rat terrier, but now thinks it might be a jack russell. He is mostly white with black and tan markings on his face, neck, back and tail. Is there any way that we can know for sure? Thank you.
It is really hard to tell, I have a rat terrier and so does my best friend. The look totally opposite but are the same breed. My best friend just recently bred her rat to a jack russell. Other than their temperaments and size, not really much difference. Both are great dogs, just love it. Noone that really matters will ever know the difference.
There are 2 different types of Rat Terriers, one type has longer legs than the other!
This is from a breeder of Rat Terriers:
Sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between a JRT and a Rat Terrier.
Rat Terriers come in a variety of colors, including solid colors such as blk/tan, choc/tan, red etc etc. All rats do not have erect ears, as a matter of fact only two of my dogs ears are erect. I prefer the button ears myself.
JRT's are usually 90% white, have button ears, come in three variety of coats, smooth, broken, and rough.
The biggest difference IMO is the personality. My Rats are more ppl lovers (no offence intended to JRT owners). My Rats are on my lap when I am on the couch and under the covers at night. I can take them walks on the farm and they stay with me and come back when I call them. I also do agility with my dog

I know that both breeds are pretty similar, and usually size is the determining factor. With that said, I've seen some over-grown rat terriers and some very small Jack Russells. If I were you I'd just pick one and go with it.

jack russells have more smoother shorter coats. rat terriers are more scraggly looking and unkept.

i think that rat terriers normally have ears too big for their heads and their eyes are kind of freaky googly. i got a dog 8 years ago and i was told he was a rat, he turned out to be a jack. i would prefer the jack. they are so much smarter. he's the best dog i have ever owned.

I went to a breeder to buy a jack russell and ended up bringing home a toy fox terrier. Just recently I got a toy rat terrier. The breeder told me it is very hard to tell the difference and only somebody in the business would be able to tell . Just love your dog and pick what you want it to be. Maybe if there is somebody who breeds them in your area would be able to tell you if it is that important.

Have you ever watched the T.V. show Frazier?
That dog was a Jack Russell. He just recently died.
Fox terriers are smaller and they are the ones that have shorter fur and are smoother.
