i saw this guy with one and it was so adorable. it was 6 years old, but it actually looked like a puppy. it was so small.
If you have not had a dog before I would not recommend a jack russel. They tend to be high strung, yappy and most like to chew and dig. They need a lot of exercise to keep their mind occupied and out of trouble. They are intelligent. They are a true working breed and have strong prey and hunting instincts. They will not hesitate to go to ground or chase any animal smaller than themselves. Most will also have no fear about going after larger animals as well and if not socialized well with other dogs jack russels can be quite dog aggressive. They tend to bond to one owner rather than to a whole family. they can be good with kids if raised with them but can be very protective of them and of their chosen owner and be very possessive. They can be very snappy over treats and toys and are not easily trained to let someone take a toy or morsel away from them. Smooth and broken coats shed and the ruff coat does ot shed too much. Patterdales are similar in size, I personally find them much cuter, and they are actually calmer and nicer dogs around the home than Jack russels even though they can be more game when on the hunt. You may consider the Parson russel. It is basically a ruined version of the Jack russel. By ruined I just mean that it is the kennel club recognized version of the jack russel and it bred to be a toned down pet qualitydog and not working material. However, it is still a terrier and all terriers like to dig and bark and require more work than some other breeds.
.Contrary to what someone else stated, Jacks do not come in two different sizes. Jacks are spanned and this determines the prey they can go after. they are bred for work ability not two specific sizes. A good working jack can be spanned where most Parson cannot. They are too wide because they have not been bred to work they have been bred for looks and color.

They are very smart, can be a bit snappy, you HAVE to socialize with both people and dogs otherwise he will be a menace to society.

Not all Jack Russels are tiny. There are different types. My sisters became bigger than she expected. Males are usually larger than females - keep that in mind.
I'd be careful before running out and buying one.
These are HIGH energy dogs that need lots of exercise. They train well but you have to work with them. If you're a sit down and watch tv type - this isn't the dog for you.
They also have a high prey drive and may not get along with cats, hamsters or other smaller pets.
