I have two parts to my answer.
I was given a Jack Russell when I was six and he was lovely. we had him from a farm and we picked him from a litter of pups. My father knew the farmer and knew of the reputation of the dog's mother and father. Both were good dogs. This said however he could be nasty when antagonised (usually by my brother) he however never snapped at me until he was old and I went to university. He then snapped at me when I came home for the holidays. We think it was his way of punishing me as he was fine when I moved back home again.
On the other hand my brother has a jack russell of his own now and I wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her. However she is a rescue dog so therefore her background is unknown.
My advice therefore is make sure you know everything there is to know about the dog before you commit to it.

If the four year old is capable of understanding that the dog isn't a toy, and that he needs to be gentle with the dog, go for it!
I cannot remember a time in my life without dogs, and I think they can be great for kids. And Russels are such cool little dogs.

personally no because kids tend to treat animals like toys and its possible a jack might take offence to this

Too much dog, too much energy. Get a gentler, more placid breed, like a retriever or a lab. But actually, four years old is too young for a dog anyway. Maybe a guinea pig, to learn the basics of taking care of an animal.

are you mad, those dogs do not like kids, purely because kids are rough, the dog will end up hurting the kid, dont waist your time!!!!

i think it is a a bad idea. jack russells are way too hyper and can be nippy around kids.
