I am considering adopting a Jack Russell Terrior, and have 2 cats at home. Can they get along?
I love the fact that you are considering adoption. Good for you! Well, You should try it out and see. every dogs behavior to cats is different. the shelters will host a meeting between your current pets and the potential to pet to see if they will get along. is your mind set on a Russell? If not, speak to the shelter adoption counselor and they will help you in the process of picking out a dog that is great for your lifestyle. Even one that will be great with the cats. Quite possibly there will be a great dog there for you that is not a Jack Russell.
I wish you the best of luck! Thanks so much for considering adoption. It really is a rewarding experience.

They should be able to tell you, they may "cat test" dogs that are up for adoption.
There could also be problems the other way, your cats may not get along with the dog, even if the dog is cat friendly.
If you are thinking of a Jack Russel, then as a one time owner myself, some things to remember.
The Jack Russel terrier has the typical tenacity of a terrier, it thinks its a big dog even though it is not. It doesn't give up. It will solve any problem by barking at it or digging at it, and one bark any JR owner will know is the one I call "question bark" - a short growl followed by a single staccato bark, repeated - you will find the dog nose to nose with something it isn't sure of, and this is the call to a leader (you) to investigate.
Bred originally as ratters, one thing I doubt you could ever train out is that if a small furry creature runs along the ground, it will chase and kill.

Jack Russell's are smart dogs, but they are also basically hunting dogs- if you are going to keep them in a small home or have a small yard, the dog may be very uncomfortable.
They are also possessive and not necessarily friendly with other animals, cats and young children included. I would recommend another breed.

Yes, Yes, Yes. They do not eat cats. I have 2 Jack Russels. 1 is 11 years old and the other 3 yrs. old. They play with the cats constantly and sleep at the bottom of our bed everynight together. My dad has also had Jacks and he has had cats. As a matter of fact they even like the chinchillias, not to the point I let them try running with them, but they don't hurt them when I am holding them. Jacks are by far one of the best dogs for protection and loyality. I also just rescued a husky and they accepted him within 2 days. Hope this helps you.
