I have a 6 month old Jack Russell Terrier puppy. Ever since we got him, whenever I feed him, he eats like he's starving to death. No matter how much I feed him, he acts like he's never eaten before in his life. He's not overweight by any means, actually he seems a little too skinny to me. I know he does not have worms or anything like that. He's even choked a couple times before. How do I get him to slow down?
PUT BIG ROCKS IN HIS BOWL SO HE HAS TO PICK THE FOOD OUT SLOWLY!!

fill his bowl to the top that way so he will have plenty of food throughout the day.if he seems to a little to skinny to you then it would be a good idea to take him to the vet to rule out any problems.

they make a special bowl for just that. it's raised in the middle to prevent the dog from wolfing down the food. look on websites for dogs under food bowls. the one i used was stnls steel and corrected the behavior immediately.

There is a special bowl, called the Brake Fast bowl, which has three pillars in the middle of the bowl. The dog is forced to slow down and pick the pieces out of the bowl.

We don't use this bowl, but we got our border to stop inhaling his food by randomly putting towels in his bowl. He'd hit his nose on the towel and realize that it wasn't food and stop eating. Now he eats slower and actually pays attention to what's in his bowl.
Don't fill your dog's bowl up with a ton of food. He'll just eat all of it and become overweight. Feed him the appropriate amount for his age and size, which is written on the food bag, or your veterinarian can tell you.

Its not uncommon for a dog to eat fast. How often do you feed him? You should be feeding him at least twice a day. If possible, try adding an extra feeding somwhere in the middle of the day. If he seems a bit skinny, you can add a litle bit more food to one or two of the feedings. Always check the recommended feeding amount on the food you are using to ensure you do not overfeed your dog. Remember, its a recommended amount and you can deviate from it a bit if needed. If you are using dry food, add some water. It will help slow him down a bit and fill him up a bit more. I have a female Ridgeback that did the same thing and it has helped her.

One of my dogs did this so I got a larger bowl and put big stones in it so he had to push them around to get to the food. Make sure the stones are big enough that you Jack can't put them in his mouth.

I have a Jack Russell Terrier and she would do the same thing.
My brother-n-law is a Vet. and he suggested we put down a bowl of her dry food and if she is hungry then she can snack on that throughout the day. In the evening I feed her roasted chicken and that seems to have worked really well for us. She is now 3yrs.old, she weighs 10 pounds.
