VERY VERY high energy dog- if you want a lap dog this isnt the breed for you.
Jack russels are TERRIERS. Look up some breed info on the internet.

Be ready for a really hyper dog!!!!! I would reccomend crate training unless you want your house torn up while you are gone. JRT's are very smart dogs but you have to be the master or they won't listen to you. I would get into an obedience class right away to help both of you learn. Good Luck!!!

My advice is "DON'T". There are far too many in shelters or put down as they are an extremely "hyper" breed. Most people do not know how to handle them. Bet cha can find a grown one for FREE. NEVER BUY A DOG WITHOUT CHECKING THE ON THE BREED AND THAT DOES NOT MEAN YAHOO. Try the AKC, or ask people that own them. We had one just dumped and he eventually made his way to my neighbor's home where he is well taken care of. We are super dog people, but he is enough to try anyone's patience. Where do you think "Eddie" on the TV show Frazier came from? — a pound!!

this is what I found on Jack Russell Terriers, be sure to do your homework before committing to this dog, they are quite a handful. They may seem like great dogs as shown in the Movie "My Dog Skip" but remember, that dog is well trained and is also a working dog so he's a happy dog. If you are a very energetic person, always biking or out jogging, roller blading etc your dog will love to come with you for exercise, however, if you prefer to stay in and play video games because it's too hot for you, then you'll prefer a mellower dog, frustration will begin to show in the form of aggression, destruction or barking if not kept adequately exercised.
The Jack Russell is a working terrier. Terrier work requires a dog that will bark at prey so that the dog can be located underground and be dug out if necessary. As a result, Jack Russell Terriers are most definitely vocal dogs.
Jack Russell Terriers are also very intelligent, high-energy dogs – requirements of a working dog which must problem-solve in the field and work tirelessly against often formidable quarry. Due to their compact size, friendly and inquisitive nature, and intelligence, Jack Russells are popular as pets. Prospective buyers should be aware, however, that while these dogs may enjoy sitting in a lap, they are not “lap dogs” – they are dogs that require training and regular and consistent exercise to maintain their temperament and to occupy their minds.
Jack Russells that are not trained on a consistent basis, or are not exercised regularly, may exhibit unmanageable behaviour, including excessive barking, escaping from the yard, or digging in unwanted places inside and outside the house. In America, several Jack Russell rescue networks have to work constantly to find temporary and permanent homes for Jack Russell Terriers whose owners could not meet these requirements for keeping these dogs as house pets. Prospective Jack Russell Terrier owners are advised to do their homework.
Most Jack Russell Terriers easily mingle with children, though they do not tolerate even unintentional abuse. Most are outgoing, and very friendly towards other dogs, but a good number show same-sex aggression issues. Some JRT's exhibit a Napoleon complex regarding larger canines that can get them into dangerous situations. Their fearlessness can scare off a larger animal, but their apparent unawareness of their small size can lead to a lopsided fight with larger dogs if not kept in check.
It is not uncommon for a Jack Russell terrier to be cat-aggressive, and homes with other small fur-bearing animals in them (pet hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets etc.) would do well to think through the ramifications of bringing a working terrier into the house.

Jack Russels are high spirited, boistrous and exciteable. Early socilisation is a must as the breed are known for being fiery around other dogs. They respond quickly to reward based training as there highly intelligent but there exuberence needs to be controlled from an early age.

I look after my son's two Jack Russells during the week and they are fantastic little chaps. One is a bit on the barky side when people come to the door but the other one is very quiet and both are extremely good natured. They always get two reasonable walks every whatever the weather day and are not overfed.Without wishing to sound boastful they love me like mad and never want to be anywhere else but close by my side.If I'm not careful they would take over my bed before I get in.

Get him in puppy kindergarten ASAP and sign him up for obedience and trick classes. I hope you're patient. These dogs are smart and notoriously hyper, but they can be totally worth it. You'll get out what you put in, so make sure to spend plenty of time training and socializing the dog. Dogs, like humans, don't automatically know what's proper - so they don't know not to pee in the house, for example. You have to teach him.
If it's not too late, I suggest getting one from the pound as well… good luck to you!

I assure you that hi_thome has the best answer. I had a Jack Russell b****. She lived for 20 years, only ever went to the vet's twice and in her lifetime killed hundreds of rats, both above and below ground. She also worked well with ferrets and was very good with children.

Oh lucky you!!! I've a five year old jack russell called Ralfie and he's my life, totally taken my heart, my home, every aspect of my life! Mad eh? They are the most loving, affectionate, loyal, naughty, mischievous, inquisitive little dogs i have ever seen! He will be your best friend for life! They are easy to train as they are quick to learn and love tricks and training times. Although people say they love long runs, mine loves nothing more than snoozing on his cushion beside me on the sofa! He hates long walks and will ask to be picked up if you take him out for too long ha ha. He stands on his hind legs with his paws in the air as if to say, jokes over, i aint going no further ha ha ha. Start training him after you've had him for three days, let him settle in first. Start him off with the usual sit, stay, down, here, come then slowly introduce new things for him to learn, he'll pick it all up so quickly. They love fun times and will play for hours, either with you or on his own! My boy is a fussy eater and wil not eat dog food! He'll eat cat food but he loves my dinners! His favourite is a sunday roast! He has one every week, yorkshire puds and gravy! Theres no crying from him coz there's carrots, broccoli and cauliflower in his dinner, he adores them, cooked or raw! Give your little man lots of veg, its so good for them and its good for their teeth too. Mine goes into raptures if you give him a carrot, mad sod ha ha ha. Funnily enough he's not that keen on meat and won't eat bacon, but he loves spag bol, adores lamb korma ( with rice and poppadums of course! ) and has been known to devour a plate of warm runner beans in gravy and ignore diced roast chicken! Give your little 'un some rice pudding too, they need lots of protein because, believe it or not, they have great muscle areas to build up! I give him a boiled egg once a week with toast and sometimes swap it for scrambled egg with a little bit of butter and grated cheese! Spoilt or what? When you take him out, after his injections, and when he's trained to come back to you if off the lead, watch out for rabbit holes, they are notorious for going down them and not being able to get out again! They will take on any size of dog so please be careful, they are fearless! You are going to have so much fun with him, lucky you, and in return for you loving him and being kind to him, he will love you and protect you for all of his life.
