Training Jack Russells

Ok to give 7 month old Jack Russell pup adult food?

I know some breeds you should keep them on puppy food for 2 years and some for just a few months. My Jack is 7 months and Im wondering when is the best time to make the transition to adult food? Is he old enough now to eat adult dog food? He is neutered and current on all shots.

p.s. — I know a popular reponse will be to "ask my vet" but I am in the process of moving and dont have a regular vet at the moment.

The standard is closer to 12 months for small breed dogs, unless he is on something like Canidae All Life Stages.

He is still growing and developing, even though he won't get much taller than he currently is. Try to keep him on puppy food for a few more months.

Add: please also note - puppy food has more calcium than adult food - it's not just about weight gain/loss

Its fine to go ahead and get him on adult dog food. If his weight drops than but him back on puppy food until he starts getting fat.

It will be okay to change the dog food. You don't have to but if you want to it will be okay. You can take them off at 6 months. and leave them on for 2 years. As long as you have them on puppy food until 6 months. It is all in what you want to do but the puppy will be fine if you change the food.

I had to put my 4 month old lab on "DOG" food for a food allergy. She did absolutly wonderful. Remember though, usually dog food had less fat and calories than puppy food. So I would just watch the pups weight.

Puppies pretty much reach their adult height at 12 months. They do continue to full out until the age of 2.
Your guy needs to stay on puppy food for a while yet.
Puppy food has more protein , more calories for growth.

for his size i don't see why not. I feed my dog food that is just a general food it has no age restrictions because no matter the age it's good for the dog. Nature's Variety, i've used it on puppies and adult dogs, and have had no problem with weight problems or over eating or under eating, they get the proper nutrition from it so they don't eat anymore than they need to, plus it limits their bowel movements to only 2-3 times a day at most, love it!!

Yes, try him on it, if he doesn't eat it, or gets thinner, switch back.

I would say wait a while and then statrt mixing the puppy food with the adult. then it would not be such a big change. Wait until the dog is one. Or when you fell the dog is ready.

yeah but they think puppy food is easier to chew sometimes and they like the sweeter taste. i tasted the two once and puppy is a lot sweeter. but they will develop just fine

Most dog food bags have age and weight ranges on the packaging, look at those for guidelines

I got my Jack Russell from a lady who owned both the parents and who was keeping one of the litter. She said to keep my dog on puppy chow for a year, so that's what I did. She's 5 now and very healthy.
At about a year, the dog will start showing a tendency to become a fat sausage body. At that point, be sure to start gradually reducing feed until you keep a stable slender weight on her.
