Im curious as to which one is easier to keep in an apartment….i keep hearing bad things bout beagles in apartments while jack russell terriers seem to be ok
well i will say this i have a JRT and she is fine in my apartment but I have heard horror stories about them destroying the place while alone. i have heard that they have chewed through walls, pulled up carpets, destroyed sofas. you name it, its probably been done. however i spend a lot of time exercising mine and crate her when i am not at home. with my situation she is almost never left in the apartment for more than a couple hours by herself. i work nights and my boyfriend works days so she always has someone there. however beagles are also not really that great of an apartment dog. i would do more research on both of these breeds before getting one. look for something a little calmer, a breed that doesnt have quite as much energy and can handle living in an apartment quite well. there are sites that will help you choose a breed. king charles spaniels are a great breed that doesnt get too big. good luck and i hope you find the dog for you

Neither. Beagles howl and bay and bark all the time. JRTs are way too active.

Actually I was gonna say get the Beagle they aren't quit as hyper…but that can be taken care of with LOTS of exercise. On the other hand Beagles bark alot and neighbors wouldn't like that lol

Neither would be good in an apartment. Both are too high energy. Beagles also can be very noisy. Jack Russels can be too if they don't have enough space and excercise.

There are pros and cons to each.
Beagles can howl and cause problems with neighbors, but they can be trained just like any other dog not to bark of howl. They are less active than the JRT but are by no means lazy dogs.
JRT don't have the howling problem, but they tend to be barkers, once again training can help that. JRT are very high energy. So if end up getting one be prepared to walk everyday and play lots of energy draining games.
Good luck with your new dog!

Agreeing with the first poster. Theres a breed selector on animalplanet.com that can match the breed to your specific conditions.

both are not so good unles you have the time to take them on at least 2 walks daily… at least 30 min. each time. Beagles are slighlty less active but need a job to do.

i live in a 600 sq ft 1 Bed apartment. i am unsure about the JRTs but i do have a beagle mix. she is mixed with a lab and she is the nicest dog ever. While she does bark (when she does its because someone is outside the apartment). she is hyper but we take her out daily to run around. i have had no problems at all, she is still relatively a small size, so we dont have any serious issues with the space in the apartment. good luck

I think that you need to reconsider your breed choices. Check out some rescue dogs.

You have picked very active breeds and when left alone, they can destroy your apartment. We are looking for something small, a dog that amuse itself. There is grooming, but a Shih Tzu would be a nice little dog. Maybe a Papillion, a pug. There are rescue groups who just deal with little dogs. I would suggest adopting.

Neither of the breeds are good for apartment living. Beagles are known for their bark, and that can be disturbing to neighbors. Jack Russell Terriers are high energy dogs and need a yard to run in, along with daily exercise to prevent them from becoming destructive.

Either one would be a disaster in an apartment. They are both active, high-energy dogs who need room to roam and a job to do. You need to get a cat.

Jacks are reallllly hyper!! Jumping running everywhere!! They also tend to scratch up the furnature from jumping on it so much.
Beagles bark and howl… so I don't think I would get either.
I've go with a weiner dog maybe a pug. Cats are always good in appartments!
Or maybe one of those crazy mixed dogs like a chiweenie or a puggle.

Jack Russell terriers are very hyper dogs. Beagles can be hyper, but they are less so than JRTs. I'm not sure either would be very good in an apartment, particularly if you are going to be working for long hours.
You are smart to think about this before you pick a puppy.

I have a beagle terrier mix and he's perfect. He doesn't bark unless someone's at the door or we're playing. Try a mutt, combo of a JRT and beagle from a rescue(that's where I got mine) or shelter. You won't be sorry.

Jack Russels are alright but very very active and Beagles are usually disobedient and get separation anxiety and trash your house when you are out. I wouldn't get either but if i had to choose then a Jack Russel would be better….
You could just wait until the ideal pup comes up and get something like a Chihuahua or something.

NOT the JRT, I had one in an apartment. If you have a day job and it's outside of a cage then it will destroy stuff. If it's in a cage then it will cry all day.

Jack Russell's needs to run around a lot. They've got a ton of energy. Beagles bark and howl and like to dig. I don't think either is good for an apartment.

Neither are good choices for apartment living. Beagles bay very loudly which can be disturbing to the neighbors. Beagles are hunting dogs, bred to trail critters by scent and needs lots of exercise.
Jack Russells are very very busy dogs. There is not enough exercise they can get. They bark alot, they're not really good with other animals and talk about needing to be kept busy. They also can be aggressive.
You really need to do research to find the breed thats right for you and for your life style. Do not go by looks, the type of dog you may be attracted to may be completely wrong for your lifestyle and you'll end up mismatched and miserable.
You can find info on both breeds at the AKC & UKC website, also their National breed clubs. Beagle Club of America and the Parson Russell Terrier (JRT's name has been changed) Club of America. The website will also give info on the various health issues, exercise and temperments for the breed.
