At first he well loved games of fetch over the park (although he never always brought the ball all the way back) but in the last week or so he seems more interested to just run round sniffing the ground, he does still sometimes well like to run for the ball but his interest has certainly lessened, i was wondering if any other parson owners's dogs seem to just run around with their noses to the ground, he is perfectly healthy and happy so it aint that and im not really bothered too much i was just wondering if this is normal for parson jack russells? any feedback or any thing on parsons would be so handy, thanks alot.
We call it reading the "doggie news". You will probably get him to be interested more in play (after he sniffs around awhile) by keeping one special ball and/or frisbee for the park and have different ones at home or you may just want to let him run around at the park and play at home. GOOD FOR U THAT HE IS A RESCUE!!

Yeah, that is totally normal. As long as he is running around and sniffing things he is fine….they love to explore new things. My Parson Jack Russell is about a yr and a half….and she is obsessed with the tennis ball…but at the park she will often become interested in other things besides the tennis balls. I also know other people with Jack Russells who have said their dog was never really interested at all in tennis balls.

My J.R. is obsessed with his toys in the home, out doors he spends most of the time with his nose to the ground sniffing, so yes I guess it must be normal. As long as he is happy dont worry, they are so lovable– just enjoy.

Animals get bored of the same thing over and over again just like people. You wouldn't expect a kid to enjoy the same toy and activities day after day. I am not trying to anthropomorphize here. These are intelligent animals, they need things to change as well to keep their minds stimulated.
One of the reasons your dog sniffs around is to find out what other dogs have been there recently. Again, the behavior is the same every day, but he's getting new information.

I've known many JRT's and we regularly meet 2 delightful young dogs on the beach and your's sounds like a typical member of the breed. These two remind me of high speed hoovers! They ignore the balls flying around, too interested in the scents on the ground. However if a ball is rolling past them they might chase it and being Terriers that's far more natural behaviour. Remember they were bred to hunt rabbit and fox so ground scent whereas a Retriever breed hunts birds and needs to see where they fall, so fetch is a great game for them! Enjoy your new friend!

Jack Russells are hunters and thats why he is sniffing around. Unfortunately, this is also means he is the pack leader. If you continue to allow him to do what he wants to do you will become subservient, this is especially true if he does the same thing when walking on a leash. He should be the follower, walk beside you looking and moving forward not pulling side to side to sniff. If he plays with the ball only when he wants to then he is showing his dominance over you. You need to regain control as the pack leader and have rules for your animal or things will just get worse.
