Training Jack Russells

whats the best jack russell terrier mix?

i want to get a dog from a shelter that will be half jack russell. what should the other half be? something thats good with other dogs not TOO hyper(will calm the jack russell in it down a little) and wont roam? preferably smaller then the jack russell or same size no bigger?

I have two JRT mixes with chihuahua. They make wonderful dogs and there are several of them at the shelter. They are bit active in the AM but totally calm at night. You have to understand they they will want to sleep with you on your bed. It's best to have two, one male and female, so that they keep each other company, because one alone could have seperation anxiety especially if you work away from home for long hours which could lead to excessive barking in some dogs. My first dog did not have this problem, and as we unexpectedly adopted another, the first one is now so very happy to have a sister. They sleep, play and eat together and having two is no more work than one. I have recommended others to adopt the chi-jack mix and all say the same. Active in the AM and completely mellow at night. You will enjoy this mix as they make great pets, easy to care for, good with kids and compact enough to take with you.

Since it's a mix, there's no way to tell you how the dog will turn out. Go to the shelter, meet some dogs, and then decide.

Talltail said it 100% right. Mixed breeds you cannot predict their overall behavior, personality until you live with the dog when it is mature.

Jacks are pretty high energy dogs so a mix of them and anything could be high energy hyper little thing.

The best way is to go to the shelter and meet the dog face to face so you get an idea of what he or she is like.

A toy breed mix sounds about what your looking for.

ummm, i'm pretty sure that the shelter won't even begin to know what the JRT is mixed with, they can only guess since 90% of the dogs they get are heinz 57's. It could be 1/3rd JRT and 1/3rd lab and 1/3rd shihpoo. Either way, I think if you're gonna adopt a shelter dog that's great… but there's no way that you're gonna go out and find a JRT/Shihtzu mix if that's what you decided. There's a ton of nice little small calm dogs in the shelter waiting for homes! Maybe you could just go look at a few and sometimes they'll let you "test" one out for a few days to see if it'll fit your lifestyle. Anyway, good luck.
