My boyfriend and I stay together a lot. He has a cat, and I have a pit bull mix. They usually get along well. My dog likes to chase the cat and tries to play, and sometimes the cat will swat at or scratch my dog. Usually she just hides.
We've temporarily taken in a stray Jack Russell terrier mix. If we can't find him a home, we're thinking of keeping him. Our concern lies with the cat since she already hates change and has no problem striking a pit bull. Is there any way the 3 of them can live together okay? My boyfriend is worried about the cat's happiness.
Call the jack russell terrrier rescue around you and save the cat. When your boyfriend got the cat he made a commitmnet to it to give it a good quality of life. Being chased by your mutt isn't very fair, good thing the cat will defend itself. Jack russells can be extreemely aggresive. Know when to say NO

Some animals get very territorial when the dynamic of thier home is changed. There is a chance that the cat won't like the new addition, and will get aggressive towards the new dog, or vice versa. There's no way to know if this will change over time, or if the cat will always fight with new dog, or if she'll hide. But….I'll bet, no matter what, she will always love her owners, and thats what's important.

Put them together and wait…
Eventually they'll get along…
Just because your boyfriend's cat scratches your dogs…DO NOT GET HIM/HER DECLAWED…
Make sure keep your eyes on them for first couple days…

it often depends, i once saw a domestic monkey who liked to ride on a pug's back, and a labrador who was in love with a koi. but, the best way to handle this is to maybe (if you have a backyard) cut it in half with a baby-pen fence and keep the two dogs in there together. keep the cat in the house, and if a dog is acting up, hold it down on its back, and place your hand on it's neck, if it tries to get up again, make an abrupt growling sound and tighten your hand a little (this sounds inhumane, but i swear it works like a charm) if it keeps growling and squirming, be patient and continue to do this. it will calm down, I PROMISE. keep one dog on a long, extendable leash away from the cat, if you have the money, get the cat declawed. but AWFUL things can happen if you're not careful. (my know a person who has a cat with half a tail and half a tongue from a racoon fight)

Usually, they will get along. But its always tricky bringing in an adult dog, because they already have their ways, and you might not like them.

I had two cats when I brought an adult pit bull home from the pound. My dog figured out pretty quickly not to upset the cats, or she gets swatted on the nose. Both my cats have all of their claws, so it hurt when she got swatted. After a few weeks my dog learned to be gentle around the cats, otherwise she was going to have a sore nose. I have had her for about 4 months, and they are actually all sleeping on the couch together right next to me. I wouldn't say they are best friends, but they get along great, and my cats are definitely not unhappy. Introduce your pit bull mix to the JRT slowly in a controlled environment. Make sure they get along. Don't leave them alone together without supervision until you are sure they get along, it may take a few weeks until you feel comfortable. Good luck with all of your pets!!!

once they get used to each other they should be ok. try a product called comfort zone for the dogs. its a wall plug in that calls down anxiety….should keep them from bothering the cat as much. i have, at one time, had a pit bull mix and 4 italian greyhounds living in the same house as 4 cats….and they all get along fine. right now i have 2 cats, 2 dogs and a rabbit…after they adjusted they all got along just fine. good luck
