Training Jack Russells

Is a Jack Russell Terrier an indoor or outdoor dogs?

She’s 3 weeks - 5 weeks old, very hyper, but she’s a little too hyper to be an indoor dog. I’m wondering if Jack Russell Terriers are supposed to be indoor or outdoor dogs?

First off, get use to jack russell’s being hyper. Its their breed. I personally would keep in for now, then as gets older let out, but bring in at night or when he comes to door. Hopefully you have a nice tall fenced in area, as they can really jump.

Why you do have her already at 3 to 5 weeks old? Puppies shouldn't be taken away from their mother until 8 weeks at the earliest, 10 weeks is preferrable though. The mama's milk helps the babies' immune systems.

Jack Russells are pretty small, you wouldn't want to leave it outside, both for safety issues, plus small dogs are much easier to snatch. This happened to my friend's shih tzu. She put her outside in the fenced in yard to potty and stepped away and someone stole her, and she never found her. It was heartbreaking. Besides, no matter what breed of dog, they shouldn't be outside all the time.

Terriers are hyper by nature. I would keep a Jack Russell inside though, especially now since she is so little.

THey need a fenced in yard. They have to have room to go outside and explore (dig). They need outlets for their energy They are definitely not calm, lap dogs. Invest in a doggy door too!

She should still be with her mother at this age. I have 2 jack Russels and they are hyper but i keep them inside. I let them outside to go to the bathroom on a chain and then in like 15 min i let them back inside. Sometimes tho you should take her out for a walk because they need excercise, it helps mine calm down a little. Best of Luck.

first she’s too young to be taken from her birth home. you shouldn’t have taken her until 8 wks.
you should have researched before getting an energetic little dog.
indoor or outdoor, depends on where you live. here in TN there are alot of JRT’s that stay outside, but the temps here don’t drop too low.
instead of banishing your new FAMILY MEMBER to the outside where she’ll likely be forgotten, try training her.

She is WAY too young to be away from her mother.

Look into a puppy obedience class, most classes require them to be at least a couple of months old.

Jack Russels are very active and very smart. They need something to do. After she graduates the puppy class you can introduce her to things like agility or other sports/tricks where she can enjoy learning new things and burn off some of her energy.

You will only make her hyperactivity worse if you stick her outside. She will never learn how to behave. You want her to learn good house manners. But you need to make the effort to teach her, which is why the classes are so important. They can’t be expected to behave if they don’t know what is expected of them. but learning basic obedience is not only a great way to bond with her but with her type of breed is it almost essential, given the hyperactivity. You need a way to help control her and her having learned basic commands will do just that.

JR Terriers are very athletic, stubborn, intelligent, wking dogs. They need activity and training. Whether outside or inside. 5wks is too young!
