the prior post is partial correct. Most hunting breeds are prone to this activity. Disguising their scent by rolling in remains so that they can keep from being detected while hunting. This is common also in herding breeds as well. As nearly all animals have keen sense of smell, if they smell one of their own they are less likely to bolt. This enables the dog to approach without being detected through smell.

In addition to two tiny rat terriers, we have a 90 lbs mix that always rolls and romps in the stinkiest stuff she can find. Can you say GROSS!!

I think most dogs do this. Seems the stinkier, the better. My pug rolls on anything dead.

There are two theories to this.. One is that it's like perfume to a dog and he's proud of his find.. The other is that it is a disguise so that he can go about his hunting without being noticed.
