Jack russells and smaller terrier dogs are usually very energetic, very hyper active, and can be harder to house break than some other breeds.
You need to talk to a rescue organization for the breed you are interested in and see if they have a dog whose temperment matches with your life style.
I would suggest taking one of the online breed recommender testes online and see what type of dog would best suit you. You need to make a decision based on space available, grooming time, exercise time, training requirements, feed and vet costs.
Here is one that you can do:

If you do choose to get a dog, please adopt! You will be saving the lives of 2 dogs, the one you adopt and the one that takes his place in rescue. Do a search on http://www.petfinder.com for dogs available in your area.
By the way, please take into account:
1. The ages of your children
2. The temperment of your children
3. The amount of time it takes to teach the child and do how to interact with each other.
Good luck!

Jack Russell is a fantastic dog. HOWEVER, they are extremely high maintenence. If you are willing to take lots of walks and play lots of ball and such, much patience and love, then this is the perfect dog for you. Before buyi8ng any dog, look up it's origin and characteristics, somthing I should have done before buying 2 beagles…urgh!!! Good luck

I agree with lulu and stklotto. As stklotto said they are indeed very hyperactive. Good luck on that one lol.

Owning a jack russell is like being the parent of a 2 year old. Their battery NEVER wears out. It's cute at first, but that energy and mischeviousness all the time can be wearing on the nerves.
Jack russells are not a good breed for inexperienced owners.

Well I have a jack russell/beagle mix, male. He is hyper , but very smart. If you want a jack russell I suggest you get a male ,my dog was hyper, then my dad got him nuetered and he is still hyper but not as much as he used to be. If you have young children , jacks will be a wonderful choice of a dog
