The mom to the puppies doesn’t have her tail and she looks fine but some of the pictures that I have seen of these kind of puppies they still have theirs and they look good too…should I or shouldn’t I get them docked???
Fro all those that are saying its cruel. Honestly..
We dock our Jrt’s tails. WHY? Because they hunt underground. Left at natural length it could break in the small spaces. We also use it as a handle.. so it can’t be too short.
For all lthose giving sane reason, thank you.
Also, it isn’t illegal everywhere. Not in the USA yet, I don’t think.

Cruel and unusual. No. Not unless it’s necessary for their line of work, but I doubt they’ll be working.

NO! Docking tails is painful and can be considered abuse. It has to be done right away too and the later you wait the worse it is. If they look good with their tales why would you even consider it. Please dont!

I prefer dogs with tails. It’s my understanding that dogs need their tails for balance, especially when running.

Keep their tales.
It will save you money and them “pain”.

I wouldnt.
Getting their tailes docked isn’t about looks anyways.
For Jack Russell Terriers the tails were originaly docked to serve as a firm handle for the dogs owner to pull him out from a hole after hunting.
Besides I think they would look cute with tails!!

I have 5 dogs. If they are a mixed breed, then simply let their tales be. No need in cutting them off if you cant sell them as a pure bread. Less money less agony for the sweet babies. I would not do it. Just go and look how cute they are. Ask yourself if it is necessary.

Hate to say this but what you are saying is should I mutilate my puppies for the sake of making me happy how they look. I have 3 cocker spaniels, two with tails, one without, the two with tails express their feelings through their tails, whilst my poor boy can only wag his little stumpy tail. ( We got him as a rescue dog who had had his tail docked before he arrived with us), do not dock their tails, it is simple mutilation and takes away 50% of their personality, as well as being increasingly illegal in most civilised countries of the world. Sorry if this sounds harsh but dogs have tails for a reason and our aesthetic appreciation is not a sufficient justification to cut them off.

i prefer dogs with the way nature intended them. if they’re born tailless, fine, if they’re born with tails, why mess with perfection.
i am curious though.
why did you breed MUTTS? with shelters so full, what was the point?

How old are the puppies? You probably don’t want to have it done now unless they are under 3 days old. Their tales are there for a reason. It helps their balance. I wouldn’t do it. I have spaniels and used to show them and it is required because of the standard they are all judged by and docking was required.

Being that mutts have no breed standard to speak of, there is no reason whatsoever to have their tails docked.
I hope the mother will be fixed as soon as the pups are weaned.

I don’t know any vet that will dock mutts.

If the puppies are older than 5 days old it is to late to have them docked. It must be done between 3 & 5 days.
It is your choice but in a mixed breed I would leave the tails be.

Docking tails (as well as ear cropping) is a stupid, cruel, barbaric act that we humans think makes a dog look better!
Only if these dogs were really to be used in hunting for prey in underground burrows could there be a POSSIBLE reason to do this.
Here in Germany docking and ear cropping is against the law except for medical reasons. It is allowed to take of dew claws as this could lead to painful injuries later in life.
how can you even think to put the babies through this (it is done without anaesthetic) just because you think they will look good????

tail docking is wrong, its cruel and not required. Chihuahuas have a lovely tail why on earth would you want it off. Just for cosmetic reasons is wrong, i don’t believe any caring owner would want to put there dog through that, just leave them a lone.
Jack Russell tails should be docked between 3-5 days of age, and done by a veterinarian. So is it too late. The tails are docked for reasons of tradition and hunting and as you have mix the breed you wont be hunting, so whats the point.

I think it would be a terrible shame to dock the poor babies’ tails, I have a 13 week old jack chi and she is absolutely gorgeous, I cannot imagine life without her now. I class myself as a responsible dog owner, she is wormed, flead, innoculated, micro chipped, socialised, in the process of being trained- and loving it!! the only thing cannot do for this gorgeous girl is give her her tail back. unfortunately (and I am now thinking of reporting the breeders to the RSPCA because I have since spoken at length with my vet and other dog owners/breeders) the breeders I bought her from saw fit to lop off her tiny, innoffensive little tail.
I can see absolutely NO reson why they would have chosen to do this, really, I think most of the reasons have been discussed here, and they only apply to working pedigree dogs. a breed as small as a jack chi poses no reason whatsoever that their tails should be cut.
I dont agree that losing their tail removes 50% of their personality, at least I hope not!!! My little Molly has bags ad bags of character but I just think its a bit sad that she only has a little stump to waggle when she wants to display how happy she is.
DONT DO IT!!! seriously.
