Training Jack Russells

I have a 3 year old cross jack Russel/chihuahua and he seems to be very delicate when you pick him up?

he yelps as if you have hurt him he has always been like this, we have had him since he was 6 months old he was a rescue, he is also delicate around the ear area, in fact any area if you put the slightest bit of pressure, other than this he is always full of beans, happy and very playfull.

This is some times common in a young dog that had been hurt before when a child had been picking them up wrong, since it hurt him before he is now expecting it to hurt. Make sure when you pick gun up to place all fingers under and more flat against his body with less finger tips touching. He is gun shy now and expects it to hurt again like last time by the child. Take care of that little baby and love on him.

Have him checked out by a vet and then follow his lead - don't pick him up, get down on his level and cuddle him or play with him. Make him warm and comfortable without the pressure of being picked up.

That can definitely be a sign of past abuse (but not always).
If he's had a past injury to his spine from being dropped, kicked or simply roughly handled as a pup you may just have to avoid doing what upsets him because it either still hurts or he just remembers the hurt with great fear.
Have your vet do a physical to rule out illness, and failing that I have seen some remarkable results on traumatised dogs from some of the more 'out there' therapies like Animal Healing.

Alot of little dogs are like this. They feel alot more then bigger dogs as there tiny boned, they also suffer from the cold more.Take him to the vet for a general check up just to make sure he's ok.Good luck.

Theres a difference between the fear yelp ('I think this will hurt') and the pain yelp ('Ouch that hurt'.) Get him checked out by the vet as that doesn't sound comfortable for him and you need to rule out any pain.
When you pick him up, try using the flat of your hand right under his ribcage, and do it very slowly. Do it while you're sitting on the floor and don't lift him high, see how he reacts to that.
Small dogs usually love being picked up so theres definately something amiss. It could be pain, or he could just be sensitive!
