Training Jack Russells

What is better: Gentle Leader Head collar, or Halti Head collar?

Which is better? and Why?

I'm thinking of getting my puppy one. :)
I have heard that the Gentle Leader is better, but that may just be for certain breeds. They do fit differently — I believe that the Halti slips off of shorter faced breeds too easily.

They are both 'band aids' that don't train but rather cover up a problem

A regular inexpensive color will work fine, if you train your puppy properly. Those expensive devices are for people who have no clue about how to train a dog. If your having problems with leash training your puppy, I'd use the money you are gonna spend on the fancy collars and put it towards a puppy obiediance class. Good luck with your puppy.

It is not good to use a head halter on puppies. These are only safe for adult dogs. These are not a replacement for good basic training. The puppy needs to be taken to a trainer and it will behave better. If the puppy thrashes around or turns his head wrong with one of these on, it can be damaging to their neck. Please, just get him trained. If he is still like this when hes older and trained, then get him a gentle leader, they are the safest, if you know how to properly use them. And remember that you still have to use a leash attached to the collar, along with the leash attached to the head halter. The leash on the collar should be used to control the dog, if the dog gets completely out of control you use the halter leash, lightly. Good luck!

I don't like using a halter on a dog. They aren't horses. A prong collar, when fitted and used properly would work best.

I've never used either, to be honest. But I've also never come across a trainer who used or would suggest either harness over a regular collar. Whatever you decide to use, please make sure that you're using it properly! :)

I have had both. If your puppy is still small i would get him the gentle leader, and when he is older (7 months or so) i would get him the halti. If he is older, just get the halti.

But good training with a regular leash and collar is better =]

Not a good idea for a pup. If used too early or improperly, the dogs neck can be damaged.

The Gentle Leader is a bit more utilitarian for us, in that it is easier to adjust, and seems to fit better.

The best thing is good, positive leash and collar training. The Gentle Leader and Halti are then used to re-enforce upon what has been learned with the collar and leash.

My wifes Guide can sometimes be a bit hard-headed, and since her safety is of utmost importance, she uses the Gentle Leader to get her Guide back on task. A lot of the time, just the sight of the Gentle Leader coming out of the backpack can cause her Guide to straighten up! When the handler has been properly trained in the use of the Gentle Leader, it is a valuable tool for keeping the dog on track. Guide Dogs for the Blind issues a Gentle Leader to all graduates who complete the required 28 days training with their Guides.
