Training Jack Russells

Has anyone ever used a halti or gentle leader with a dog?

We loved ours.

Oh yeah. They rock. I still use them for both of my dogs when I walk them. It helps me get my dogs back on track when they get distracted by a bunny or a squirrel. The purpose of a halti is to direct your dog's head to where you want your dog to go. Wherever the dog's head goes that's where the rest of the dog's body goes. Don't listen to anymore who says don't use them often. They don't hurt dogs, they don't menace dogs. It takes some time for a dog to get used to them, If you're dog struggles with it on it's not because your dog hates it. It's because he/she isn't used to it. What's most important is that you show your dog you're confident that the halti will work because if you don't your dog will sense it and have less faith in you. Stop using it when you're confident you don't need it anymore.

yeah i have used it as a training tool and that is all it should be used for. train ur dog and then quit using it. i trained my dog in about a week with this and he doesnt pull on his leash any more.

EDIT: and i just wanted to clarify. i dont use them anymore because i trained my dog with it. using the halti it is a lot easier to train ur dog to heal. so i trained him and now i have no need for it anymore. he is very obedient and always listens to me

Yeah, used the Gentle Leader with both of ours. Worked pretty well with the one dog … the other pulled just as hard and it warped his pretty face and rubbed all the hair off.

So, I'd say … mixed results. I might add, they both HATED it.

I work in vet hospital as an RVT and we always have recommended gentle leaders. A lot of people really like harnesses thinking that they will help them have better control but it is actually the opposite.

Gentle leaders work with the same principal as putting a lead on a horse. The neck strap when put in the proper place is suppose to remind the dog of when mother carried them and they should relax. Since gentle leaders put no pressure on the chest dogs don't pull.

Most dogs don't like them at first and most will throw a little tantrum, whatever you do don't give in, positively reinforce, feed treats lots of them, find a treat that your dog only gets when wearing the gentle leader, that way they can associate those yummy treats with putting it on. I have seen so many people that just give because there dogs " don't like it", if they only would have tried it a few minutes a day they would see it just takes getting use to.

I have a 110lb mastiff and I couldn't walk her, she walked me.
Using a gentle leader on her has helped 100% and she's a breeze to walk now.

Yes and they are very effective at preventing pulling but not good at all to teach a dog not to pull.

The gentle lead didn't work with my dog. He wanted nothing to do with it. A few times he did it and I can see how it can work. I then tried the gentle lead that is on the chest. Made by the same company. It is working quite well.

I sometimes use a halti on my young dalmatian and the difference in behaviour is amazing. With the halti on, I can even let the young kids walk him without worrying that he'll pull them over! I don't need to use it all the time, but I mainly use it if me and my dog are doing a lot of street walking as there are a lot of chicken shops where I live and people dump bones all over the place so the halti definitely helps because it controls my dog's head and stops him lunging for food!
