I want to get a jack russell terrier and im doing a research b4 getting one plaese help thanx.
They are great house dogs!!! I have an 8 year old female and she is the most loyal and smartest dog I have ever had. I wouldn't recommend them around young kids….my Jack loves attention but the younger kids tend to pull on her ears and she will nip at them! But besides that, they are very very smart, easy to train, very protective(very little dogs but think they are huge!!), and if someone were to hit someone…she attacks the hitter!! Yes they are very hyper but they just need to let it out in the backyard with a game of fetch or something. One problem….they are hunters! They hunt mice, rats, anything small…..so when she sees something she won't stop until she gets it…which usually means by the time she is done she is so dirty from digging in the mud or dirt or whatever she may get into!! She loves to make a mess on herself which means lots of baths! I don't know if I just got lucky and got the dirtiest Jack Russell out there but I don't mind the bath once a week!! She hates cats…yet her best friend is a cat! Lol! She loves water….the hose is her favorite toy…they are great water dogs! Oh and the short hair coats shed a lot!! But all in all…..they are great!! I wouldn't trade her for anything!!!

We have one and so do my in-laws. They give theirs a bath sometimes as often as every week, whereas we bathe ours only about once a month… how often should we bathe Jack Russell Terriers?
Once a month is fine. I wash my JRT when I notice that the white in her coat is starting to take on a yellowy tinge or earlier when she starts to smells. It normally works out to be about once a month or every other month. Definitely don't wash her every week. This will sap the skin of essential oils needed to keep it nice and soft instead of dry and flaky.

i have a cute 5 yr old jack russell terrier, but the problem is, my family and i are allergic to pet hair. i really would much rather my dog be an inside dog though so im trying to figure out ways that i could stop him from shedding to be able to bring him inside..im afraid to shave him cause he might be really ugly! =-0 any OTHER ideas?
You can't stop him from shedding but you can reduce the shedding. A good daily brushing will help. Fish oil gel caps help. Also a diet of premium quality food will help reduce shedding. Our pets need quality food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. "Vet approved" means they have a vet on staff to approve their product. In other words, someone paid to approve it. Same with foods most vets recommend. Salesmen "gift" vets then the vet recommends the food. Most vets are not nutritionists! Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient Wellness, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. The GSD (male) is 16 months old and the Jack Russel Terrier (female) is 4 years old. He paws at her and runs around her. He is outside and she is inside. She won't even go in the backyard anymore un less he is in his pen!
Wow…. I don't know! That sounds backwards to me, because my Crack Russell Terrier tortures our other two dogs!!! I think she's the antichrist! Be glad yours is calm! Mine is a drug addict or something!

My Jack Russell Terrier is Terrified of loud construction trucks, they just started doing construction on the road next to my house, it will be going on for 100 days. He shakes constantly and runs around the house knocking things over nonstop! He is 11 years old and seems in good health, but he is driving me nuts and wearing himself out! I am afraid for his health. I dont have any where I can take him. Any good suggestions would be so appreciated. He is climbing on me now, and will be all day. I dont want to just leave him alone. I am not working right now so I dont have to leave him much, but I dont seem to be of much comfort to him. Can you help? He is like a child to me. I love him.
Good answers so far. Can I give him benadryl? what about a small size carrier? Do you think that would help? Thanks everyone.
I agree start with a Benadryl capsule and if that doesn't mellow the poor guy out, you should ask your Vet for a mild sedative. Especially at his age and Jack Russell's are a bit hyper anyway. My dog freaks completely out at thunder and sometimes we have to sedate her. She's a little hyper too, she's a Hybrid and some noises just make her nuts! Good Luck

My dog is a 3 year old Jack Russel Terrier i know being hyper is in their breed but he is overly hyper and he also barks and we have shock collor for him but that doesn't even work sometimes i was wondering what other ways there are for both questions thanks a lot
Not only do Jack Russels need an EXTREME amount of exersize they also need something to do.
They're one of the smartest dogs alive. They need something that tests their intellegence. Look into "Flyball", agility, and "Earth Dog" competitions.
Boredom and not enough exersize lead to non-stop barking. Also, distructive behavior and fence jumping.
Teach her cute stuff. Teach her to clean the house. She can be trained to pick up toys and clothes and bring them to you, or put them away. Teach her to jump through hoops, jump rope, dance, and "sing" (bark) on command. Get "Dog Tricks for Dummies" it has lots of cute stuff to teach her, and in the back is a list of clubs and activities to join.
Teach him to run next to a bicycle. Go for long runs everyday. Plan on working up to an hour a day, at least. More is better. Tired dogs are managable dogs.
EDIT
"Supplements" won't help. Not against the energy of a JR. Nothing short of narcotics will dull the edginess of the little guys. In fact, at the clinic where I worked, I saw more than one JR over come the effects of very powerful drugs.

We're looking to get another dog to add to our family. We'd just like to make sure this dog (medium sized preferably) will get along with our beloved Jack Russell Terrier who's getting old now.
Those of you who know JR Terriers or who have some experience with this or ideas would greatly help. THanks!
Wooo i have a Jack Russel Terrier, a white one. Ruff coated looks really scruffy so cute though. I know Boston Terriers get along great with them and also poodles do
