Training Jack Russells

Where can I find a Jack Russell Terrier that will only grow to 5lbs.?

My brothers friend got a really small puppy and my parents only want jack russell terriers. So i need to find a dog that will stay small for its whole life. and somewhere in atlanta georgia.
what if i breed it with a chihuahua

Unless the pup happens to be some sort of a runt or a super small one, you won't be able to. JRT's are supposed to be between 10 & 15 inches at the shoulders, so 5lbs at that height would not be good.

Try http://www.petfinder.com to see if perhaps there is a JRT or JRT mix that's on the small side.

Is it possible to have a black jack rusell terrier?

My jack russell is all black with a tiny white spot on his chest. The previous owner swears that he is a purebred, but I read that for a jack to be purebred, they must be 51% white. However, I also heard that there is a new type of jack russell which is supposed to be more of a family dog and is longer and black. I'm just wondering if anyone knows anything on the topic.

You might have a Jjack Russell mix, but you don't have a purebred. Do not use it for breeding, get it neutered and just love the little guy. And their is no new type out there.

I have a Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix and she is a red Merle color, very little white or her but she is a great dog.

Does anyone know the length of an 8 week old Jack Russell Terrier pup?

Hey there! I'm getting a jack russell terrier puppy during the middle of next week. I was wondering if anyone knew the length of an 8 week old jrt pup. Pretty please and thanks!

Length? From nose to tail? I'm sure it varies from puppy to puppy. Simply ask the breeder to measure them.

would a jack russell terrier be a good dog for a first time owner?

me and my family would love a jack russell terrier, and we would give the dog lots of attention and exercise. But from monday - thursday it will be alone for 5 hours, would this be okay?

It is not a breed I would recommend for a first time dog owner, however, if you adopted an older dog 2-5 years of age, you're likely to fare better.

A dog that age is out of puppy crazies (most terriers are returned or sheltered at 6 months to a year of age due to their insane antics and independent personalities), and is slightly calmer.

The Jack requires a LOT of mental stimulation, or he will become destructive. Due to their breed job of going to ground (going under earth for game), they tend to be diggers, and are very prey driven, so they need to be supervised with any small pets you may have.

Being gone for hours isn't a big deal, as long as you get the dog a kennel to relax in, and be sure to exercise (physically and mentally) adequately for the dog.

I again highly suggest you go to a rescue and get an older dog to start with, so you can have a good experience, and get a feel for them. If you want a puppy, talk to REPUTABLE breeders, and do your research. Look up what they have for health issues, their energy needs, etc.

It is always important to research before choosing a breed.

My Jack Russell Terrier chews on rough and textured things what should I do?

My Jack Russell chews on anything rough or textured is their a reason and is there any way to stop him?

If he's a puppy, it's probably because he's teething. It's normal. But to stop him, you have to tell him "no" and take the thing away, and then give him a toy that's his and praise him when he takes it in his mouth. You have to repeat over and over, and eventually he'll understand he's only allowed to chew his toys.

I need a good dog toy for my 2 year old Jack Russell Terrier?

My Jack Russell Terrier is a very enthusiastic chewer and I would like to find some dog toy that will take her at least a day or so to destroy. She tends to swallow a bit of the toy, so preferably something safe to eat.

I know the feeling! This may not be the answer for a chew toy, but my 2 JRT's love this. I put a hard rubber ring on the end of a bungee cord, attach to a rope, and hang from a tree. It is just at a level they can jump up and grab it in their mouths. They hang (bouncing all around) growl, swing, and as I call it, do their Elvis impressions. It is the funniest thing you have ever seen and it uses up both their energy and chewing tendencies at once. They love it.

can my kids have a jack russul terrier?

my kids want a jack russul terrier named charity she is a girl and a puppy. my kids are 8, 11 and 12.how do I know if they are responsable enough.

Jack Russell's are high energy dogs. While they can be wonderful with kids, they'll tolerate no abuse . This may not be a good first dog for you. They honestly require a more experienced owner. I had one that I loved almost like he was one of my kids. They are highly intelligent and very prone to getting lost because of their instinct to "run to ground" anything they get a scent on. I can't say enough about the breed, but they really do require an owner with experience.

Call a local animal shelter and get their opinion on a good first dog. An older dog is an excellent choice for many people, Usually a lot of the training has been done already. I adopted a 2 year old lab/spaniel mix 12 years ago and she has been a pure joy. Good luck to you!

Does any one know the difference between a rat terrier and a jack russell terrier? We have a new puppy.?

Someone gave us a puppy in May, and our vet at first thought it was a rat terrier, but now thinks it might be a jack russell. He is mostly white with black and tan markings on his face, neck, back and tail. Is there any way that we can know for sure? Thank you.

It is really hard to tell, I have a rat terrier and so does my best friend. The look totally opposite but are the same breed. My best friend just recently bred her rat to a jack russell. Other than their temperaments and size, not really much difference. Both are great dogs, just love it. Noone that really matters will ever know the difference.

There are 2 different types of Rat Terriers, one type has longer legs than the other!

This is from a breeder of Rat Terriers:

Sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between a JRT and a Rat Terrier.
Rat Terriers come in a variety of colors, including solid colors such as blk/tan, choc/tan, red etc etc. All rats do not have erect ears, as a matter of fact only two of my dogs ears are erect. I prefer the button ears myself.
JRT's are usually 90% white, have button ears, come in three variety of coats, smooth, broken, and rough.
The biggest difference IMO is the personality. My Rats are more ppl lovers (no offence intended to JRT owners). My Rats are on my lap when I am on the couch and under the covers at night. I can take them walks on the farm and they stay with me and come back when I call them. I also do agility with my dog

How to get daschund/jack russel terrier to stop chewing on furniture?

WE have a 5 month old daschund/jack russell terrier mix and she is chewing on the bottom of our kitchen cabinets!! She totally destroyed the toy I got her(Bo Bo from the Petsmart commercial!) and she now wants to chew the cabinet…any suggestions?? Thanks :)
Your dog has a lot of excess energy that needs an outlet. You need to give her something that she's allowed to chew on so that she'll leave the furniture alone, along with some correction to teach her the difference between what she is and is not allowed to sink her teeth into.

I'd recommend some good rope toys for her to play with - supervised, because they can be shredded and eaten. Also, there is a manufacturer of dog toys named JW Pet - they have some products that are dang near indestructable (we have 2 Jacks, and these are the only toys that can stand up to them). I'll put the link in below - we have the Holee Molee, Spider Ball, Jackeroo, and Invincible Chains. These are all over a year old, and while very well chewed and having survived some serious tuggie sessions, are still in very good shape.

And I'd also strongly recommend that you enroll her in a training class. Jacks are notorious for being intelligent and troublesome in the most frustratingly entertaining ways. Getting a good foundation in with some training classes will pay serious dividends in the future.
