Our jack russel/beagle puppy only growls at our 1 year old. What do I do?

I'm not even sure if "Shakey" is a jack russel/beagle mix. He is Jack Russel, but I don't see a lot of beagle in him. My main concern, however, is that he growls at my one year old daughter when she comes near him. My 7 year old can jump on him and Shakey does not mind. What should I do other then a muzzle and constant supervision?

I am so sorry to say this but you may need to rehome your dog.
BUT before you do- try this -
while the dog is on an adults lap, place the baby on another adults lap and, while the dog is being pet by the adult and someone "held" have the baby give the dog a dog treat- but not the kind you always give it- do something a little tastier- like cheese etc.

Gradually switch from the treat to being pet by the baby- HAND OVER HAND! (every other interaction at first and then increase the affection so the dog does not always expect food when baby is near- ya know? . This way the baby learns how to pet and how to treat the dog AND the dog can learn to trust the baby.

At all other times keep them very carefully supervised. If the baby is going near the dog, try to do this exercise, if you can. Try doing this at about 2-3 times a day for a week or two, and then see if there is any change.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

Whats the best way to stop a 10 week old Jack Russel Terrier puppy from constant nipping? ?

I give her chew toy after chew toy, but she still likes to jump up and nip at my neck and face. Same goes for guests and friends, while sitting with her. Sometimes, she'll bite at our ankles. It's annoying as hell. I need to discipline her without hurting her. What's the best method of doing so?

Unfortunately that's a part of the breed. Probably the best way to combat this is…the exact moment she does this say in a sharp bark tone, "No!" and pick her up and put her in a room and close the door. Ignore her for a while. If she barks and cries let her until she stops. Then after a while let her out. If she jumps onto people and doesn't nip at all give her positive reinforcement and pet her and say, "Good girl." but if she nips again then repeat the above by isolation. Make sure you say no in a sharp bark like tone and at the moment she does the bad action. Don't wait or she'll get confused and not know what behavior is bad and start to act out. Try that. It should take a few days.

I have a jack russel terrier puppy and her nose is always dry?

Is this normal? She's healthy and happy but the nose is dry

There isn't a clear cut answer for this question. A dog's (or cat's) nose may be very wet and cool one moment then be warmer and not-so-moist the next. All in the course of a day.
However, prolonged dry, cracked nose, particularly with loss of pigmentation, scabs or open sores should definitely be examined by your veterinarian. An ill animal will often have a warm, dry nose, and there are a host of dermatological (skin) problems that can be seen in this area, such as Pemphigus Foliaceus.

One other note of caution: dogs, cats, horses, and other species are prone to sunburn (also known as "solar dermatitis") and subsequent skin cancer on noses, ear tips, and around eyes. Light coated, pink-nosed animals are at greatest risk. Check with your veterinarian about providing sun protection for your pet if they are in this category of risk.

As long as your dog is eating, drinking and acting normally, there shouldn't be any problems.

If the dog starts acting differently, stops eating or drinking then I would definitely call your vet right away.

It would be best to visit a vet as she is still so very young(but even middle aged dogs should go in a vet with these kinds of problems).

where can i get a jack russel terrier puppy for free in northern california?

my family really wants one but we cant afford to pay for it, anyone know or have one that we can adopt for free?

The cost of the dog is the least of the cost associated with dog ownership. If you cant afford to pay a minimal amount to get the dog how are you going to pay to keep him.

Here is a minimum list of the costs
The First Year
Veterinary Care/Laboratory Tests - $100 to $200
Immunizations - $50 to $100
Internal/External Parasite Treatment and Control - $100 to $150
Spay/Neuter - $40 to $200. The cost often depends on the dog's size and age.
Food - $150 to $250
Miscellaneous (collars, leads, obedience training) - $200 to $225
Total: $640 to $1,125

Dogs - Annual Costs
Veterinary Care/Laboratory - $50 to $125
Immunizations - $40 to $75
Internal/External Parasite Preventatives - $100 to $150
Food - $150 to $300
Miscellaneous - $100 to $125

Total: $440 to $775

Why won't my Jack russel terrior puppy eat any of the food I give to her?

I have this long legged multi coloured Jack russel terrior puppy(female.)
Whenever I give it normall dog food, it dosn't eat it. She will only eat whole weat rice with cooked veggies but I don't have the time to preppare in time without being late for school!
HELP!!!!!!!

You may wish to try another brand of kibble.
To encourage eating what you are now feeding, perhaps a small amount of low sodium broth(so kibble doesn't swell) It can also be frozen in ice cube trays for when you need them.Same goes for what you have been cooking.
There are many good canned foods to avoid any cooking that can be added in small amounts.

Questions on new Jack Russel puppy ?

just a couple questions concering my new rescued jack russel Milo

what toys do jack russels like?
what food would be good for a 6 months old puppy? eg dry tinned etc
any advice would be good

thanks :D .

Jacks love to chase things. They love toys with squeakers (but they usually kill them fairly quickly). Some Jacks are obsessive ball dogs.
As for food, buy a quality puppy food (dry is fine) and do not free feed or you will end up with a fat dog, and no idea when it will go potty. (30 minutes after they eat and during high energy play). Start training ASAP they are very smart and will test you for their entire lives.
Go to www.terrier.com.
Attend a JRT dog show in your area. They are super fun and a real kick in the pants. Lots of events for everyone! (JRTs that is)

Training tips for a Jack Russel puppy.?

I have a new jack russel pup and I am having trouble potty training him. I have been using the same methods that my sister and brother in law use on their pit bull puppy, but it doesn't seem to have any effect. I would love some advice.

My first tip would have been not to get a JR! I love the small terriers but they can be a royal pain. JRs are extremely bright, inquisitive and very difficult to train if you're not very experienced and up to the challenge(way harder than a pit bull!) They will dig up your yard and bark all day if left outside where they can see the world passing by. They will dash around an apartment, jumping on and off the furniture, until you and your downstairs neighbors are insane. They will hang off your kid's clothes and steal anything just to get you to chase them. They will also torment your cat and kill your kid’s hamsters. Hell of a lot of fun or frustration - take your pick! I love and own terriers, but this is why I've never recommened a JR to someone else. An awful lot of them end up in the shelters.

First, get him neutered immediately - or as soon as your vet will allow it. He'll be much healthier (no fear of prostate problems and cancers later on) and you'll have fewer temperament-related problems like marking (peeing) on the furniture.

All pups should be kept in a dog crate when you're not there and when you can't supervise them. That will contain any mess and also keep him from learning that he can chew your stuff. A young pup has to go out at least every four hours and also right after he eats or drinks, so don't feed him right before you leave or go to bed. An no water for at least two hours before bedtime.

When you're home, supervise him and train him not to go in the house. If you see him start sniffing the floor, pick him up and take him out right away - he's about to go! Keep him on a leash at all times and tie it to your belt so you know where he is. This way you can correct him and get him out as soon as he even THINKS about peeing or pooping.

You and your family need to provide clear, firm leadership so he doesn't learn that he can growl, bite and basically tell you what to do. By the time he's three months old you should be doing some motivational obedience training with him for at least 15 minutes every day - HEEL, SIT, STAY, DOWN, COME, plus a lot of fun tricks.

Jack Russell Terriers are bundles of non-stop energy. Make sure he's getting plenty of strenuous exercise every day, at least a thirty minute run twice a day.

If he's in bed or on the couch with you, you're giving him the impression that he is your equal - you need to be the boss. Get his butt on the floor and keep it there. Don't do anything for him before he does something for you. If he wants to go out or get a treat, he has to sit and stay first. If he nudges you and demands to be petted, make him lie down before you do it. Don't let him jump up on you - use the leash to correct him and only pet him when all four feet are on the floor. Absolutely no playing tug-of-war; it teaches him to challenge your authority and growl at you.

Read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com
