We have a Labrador but he's not really mine. I do all of the walking, feeding and playing. I desperatly want a dog of my own! I have good school reports, i do some housework and i help everyone if they need it! I would pay for the Crate and the pup and toys but my parents would need to pay the vet bills until ive got a job.
Unfortunately the household is not a democracy. And besides? How old are you? How many years until you're off at college? Will your JRT be coming too? Chances are, your parents will end up with your dog.

He is 13 weeks and just wondered when he will be fully grown?
Thanks in advance for your answers!
most dogs will stop growing in height 10-12 months and then will fill out 12-18 months

The digging behavior is instint for a Jack Russell. It's what they were bred to do. They have a ton of energy. Most of the time this type of behavior surfaces out of boredom, and let me tell you if you do not keep you Jack entertained you will be in for one heck of a bumpy ride. Take your jack for a long walk to occupy him/her and calm him/her down a bit at least once a day. I generally walk my Jack for one hour at a time. See if this at least curbs the behavior. A tired puppy is a happy puppy. Use the reward/punishment system. When he/she begins to dig correct the dog and give him something else to do that is acceptable…play with a ball or chew on a bone. Also, this breed can get bored VERY easily. Enroll him/her in an obedience class and maybe try out agility or flyball with your jack. I have done obedience with my Jack in addition to freestyle and agility. He loves to train and has turned into a pretty well behaved JRT…as well behaved as they can get.
Good luck!

I have a 6 month old JR puppy and I need help on housebreaking. And why does he alway try to bite my leg and feet? Can this be stopped. Whenever I put him on a leash, he won't walk, but once he's loose he runs like crazy and it's almost impossible to catch him. He's a very aggressive puppy and likes to bite.
Guess you didn't do much research before you got a Jack Russell Terrier, huh? They are hyper and aggressive and very hard to housebreak. Get him neutered immediately.
BEFORE you got any dog you should have read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com

Go to a training class or hire a professional trainer to help you with this, but let me warn you. Many of the people charging big bucks as "trainers" are not very good and may have no more experience than you do - especially with terriers and aggression problems. Ask you local vet for a recommendation. Make sure you check out references from their satisfied customers. Check with the BBB for complaints. Look for a trainer who is a member of the International Association of Canine Professionals web site at www.dogpro.org, which allows you to search for trainers in your state. Their requirements for trainers to join are very stringent. And DON'T send your dog away to be trained. It's a waste of money - you can't build a relationship with a dog that doesn't live with you.

i have a crate that is fairly large. there is plenty of room for a blanket and toys and newspapers. however, i feel bad leaving her here for so long. my other option is the laundry room. it would give her alot more room to run around and play. the only downfall is that the laundry room is in the basement and it gets pretty cold in there. i know dogs can stand the cold but i feel bad. which place should i keep her?
If you knew you were going to be gone for that long everyday why would you get a puppy. Puppies need attention all day everyday they need to be stimulated and let out constantly so they do not create bad habits like going in the house. i have 2 jack russels and i would not leave them alone for more than 3 hours because jacks and hyper dogs and need constant stimulation. The one time i left mine alone they urinated all over the house and ripped almost everything to shreds. You need to find a puppy sitter if you are going to be gone that long. And next time you choose a puppy, choose wiser and so your research.!

My puppy is a jack russell poodle mix, and about 4 months old. She's not spayed yet. She's been peeing in her sleep for almost 2 weeks now. It's not every time she goes to sleep, but often. She's mostly housebroken. She still has a few accidents every once in a while, and we take her outside every 45 minutes about. Why is she doing this? Should I worry?
she could have weakened urethra muscles. That can contribute to urine leakage. It can get better with age and some dogs just don't get better. It is a genetic issue.

Is there a way to tell if a Jack Russell will be short-legged or long-legged and can you tell whether they will have a smooth or rough coat when they are only 8 weeks old?
Its easy to tell.
You can start telling the coat when they’re pretty young.
It should be obvious whether the dog is short-legged or long legged.
By the way, if its an actual Jack Russell Terrier, it will NOT be short-legged. Jrts are supposed to be balanced, and they can’t be balanced with short legs and long bodies. They do not have short legs.

I have taken him to the vets and they said the breeders should not let me take him untill he is 8 weeks is this true? They said he is healthy and he is also weaned.I just really need some help on bringing him up the right way.I have had jack russells b4 so I know about the breed its just that I have never had a puppy this young b4.please help.
thank you for your answers anwen55 and joanned69 they really helped I feel better now.
If he is healthy and weaned there shouldn't be a problem. There is no reason why youshould have a problem with your puppy, especially since you have had the breed before. Just remember how young he is, housetraining will take a little longer because he won't have full control over his bowels & bladder and he'll probably be more reliant on you for a few weeks plus he will need 4 or 5 small meals a day because his stomach will be very small too.
Many breeders let their pups go before 8 weeks for a variety of reason - breeders of large breeds with large litters can't possibly give 10 or 12 pups indiviual attention and, as a puppy will (hopefully) be spending the next 15 yrs with humans, it's important they learn to live with them at an early age. I wonder if your vet has ever actually bred a litter (many haven't!)
Even the Kennel Club do not stipulate a minimum age for pups to leave their Mum because it is realised that different breeds and even different litters have different needs - there is no hard and fast rule.
Enjoy your pup!

Any help at all will be appreciated as this is the 1st puppy I have ever had.
the most important thing you can do for your pup at this age is socialise him / her. Even before your dogs vaccinations are finished you can get her out and about just don't let her on the floor where un-vaccinated dogs have been or allow her to socialise with dogs who may not have been vaccinated. You can still let her experience the sights and sounds she needs to get used to you will just have to carry her. Take her in the car, on the bus, train, to the shops, to school to see the kids for a walk in the woods etc. etc. Puppies who do this when they are young grow into well adjusted adults and by socialising her at a young age (the critical period of human socialisation is from 7 to 12 - 14wks) you avoid many problems later.
As to basic obedience use only positive reinforcement methods, clicker training, play training etc. Make it fun and keep it short and simple (there are many good books available). Also join a good puppy class. You can go without your dog until she is vaccinated in order to watch, learn and start at home. There will also be people there to discuss things with and get tips from.
