Training Jack Russells

Would should i do to prepare for my Jack Russell Terrier puppy?

okay. so tomorrow after school i am going to get a Jack Russell Terrier pup.

and i have never had a puppy.

so what do i do?
lol. i know i am ready i just need some advice.

since its a puppy should i get it some

and what else should i do to prepare?
oops.
up there i meant to say:

since its a puppy should i get its some puppy formula/special food
btw. its a very small puppy.
just turned 6 weeks.

and it will be mostly an inside dog.

There's a lot to prepare!

Step 1: Find services in your area. You're going to need a vet, and if there is a puppy/obedience class in your area sign up for it. It's a great place for socialization and it will help you learn to get your puppy to listen to you.

Step 2: Have a schedule. When are going to feed her? When are you going to walk her? Keep in mind that puppies can't hold it for too long - a two-month old puppy can hold it for about three hours MAX. Also figure out where her crate is going to be. I recommend keeping it in your room.

Step 3: Puppy-proofing! Puppies are like toddlers and investigate with their mouths. Get down on your hands and knees and look at the world from a puppy's point of view. Pick small objects up off the floor, secure loose wires out of the puppy's reach, push items back from edges of tables and shelves. If you have bookshelves or something similar, take books off the bottom shelf. Look at everything and ask yourself what your puppy might possibly able to chew.

Step 4: Supplies. There's a whole lot of things you'll need - I'll make a list for you.

Crate - Crates are essential with housetraining and keeping your puppy out of things if you can't watch him. The crate should be just big enough for him to stand up, turn around, and lay down in. If it's bigger, he will potty in one end and sleep in the other. If you don't want to have to replace crates as he grows, buy a crate divider.

Food - Avoid Iams, Purina, Pedigree, Ol' Roy, Science Diet, and similar. Some great brands are Canidae, Innova, Evo, Wellness, Eagle Pack, Solid Gold, and Taste of the Wild. Though most are on the expensive side, it will keep your puppy happy and healthy. And, yes, look for puppy formula (except if you get Canidae).

Treats - You'll need treats for housetraining, crate-training, and pretty much everything you can think of. You can either get commercial dog treats or use small pieces of deli meat, cheese, or cracker. Rip big treats into small pieces so they don't fill her up as quickly.

Toys - Give the puppy some toys of her own so she doesn't rip up your furniture! I recommend Kongs - they can be stuffed with kibble and are very entertaining for most dogs. Bones are great too. Stay away from rawhide, as it can be pretty bad for them.

Brush - You'll want to get a dog brush of some sort to keep her coat free of burrs, mud, and tangles.

Food/Water Dishes
Leash (not the retractable kind)
Collar (just a plain one, not choke, pinch, etc)
Bed - To go in the crate; look for a tough one she won't chew up.
Lint brush/Lint roller - Trust me, you'll need it!

I think that's everything - I may be forgetting something, though.

Good luck with your new puppy! Feel completely free to email me if you have questions or need help with ANYTHING.

Add: Where are you getting this puppy? Please, please, PLEASE ask the breeder to keep him for another two weeks - puppies NEED to stay with mom until eight weeks. If not, they may develop behavior problems in the future due to lack of early socialization with mom and siblings.

If a Jack Russell puppy is good with children, is this a sign she will continue to be. She is a mix but looks

she is said to be a mix, but looks just like a jack russell.

my jr terrier is probably mostly wire-haired terrier, because he is larger, than most jr terriers..yet, like yours, he looks like a jr terrier.. the most annoying, and possibly dangerous thing, that jr's do, is jumping up high, and jumping on people… this could be dangerous around young children, because they could be scared of a dog trying to jump on them, or knocking them over because the dog is excited.. yet, if your dog does not exhibit this trait, it could have more of the wire-haired terrier in her, and it sounds like her personality, could be atypical, and calm for a terrier.. just keep an eye on her, around strange or visiting children, to be on the safe side !!

I have a cat that is 7 years old. I brought a 7 week old Jack Russell puppy home. My cat has licked her hair?

off of her belly and both hind legs. The vet says it's an allergy. The dog chases her all of the time. Is the dog making her nervous enough to have licked her hair off?

THATS NOT NORMAL
get rid of that dog

Is it normal that a Jack Russell puppy cry when it´s alone?

My puppy has to be at my apartment alone all day until my husband and I arrive, a vet told us he would never stop crying while it´s alone because it´s a dog that needs to be with someone. Is it true?

Yes, it is true.

Sometimes getting a second dog will solve the problem, but not always.

My 2 months old jack russell puppy often release his bowel on the patio door step?

how can I stop him because the spray away dosen't work.

He's still just a baby! 2 months old is only 8 weeks old!!!! He should have just now been taken from his mama and litter mates!!! Patience and training, take him where you want him to go! Jack Russells are very smart dogs and it won't take him long to get the drill!

Why does my 5 month old Jack Russell puppy run sideways?

He seems to have been doing it since we first got him, he can walk fine, but when he picks up speed his back end kicks out and he runs sideways.

Is this anything to worry about, we got him and his sister and his sister is fine?

He could have a luxating patella. Usually this can be fixed with therapy. My dog had this when he was young, but we picked it up too late and he had to have a pin in his knee. He runs sideways. Does your dog sit down funny as well? Kinda with his legs out to the side instead of directly toward his front legs. If you do not get this sorted, and if it is a luxating patella, your dog will be in loads of pain (as his knee will be slipping in and out) and his leg could go lame and have to be amputated at the worst case scenario. I hope you get your dog x-rayed at the vets and that all is fine.

How can I discourage my 9 week old Jack Russell female puppy from continous non stop barking?!?

My 9 week old Jack Russell female keeps barking incessantly when she wants attention, she sleeps in a puppy cage at night in the kitchen and early morning she starts this continual barking, its non stop bark after bark. If she is in the car, which she also travels in a med pet carrier for safety as she is so small she also barks incessantly when she wants out! I want to discourage her from this needless barking - please help! However she needs to stay in the puppy cage for safety as I have other older dogs too.

One person said that they put peanut butter in the dog's mouth when they wouldn't quit barking, and it put a stop to it after a few times…LOL maybe worth a try…

Best age to train a Jack Russell puppy???

I have a 5 month old Jack Russell puppy and I want to have him trained (obedience training)? What is the ideal age to have him trained and what is the best method???

Take him to a competent trainer who will teach you both together, and not with too much punishment for such a young dog.
Jack Russells have a whole lot of energy and they are emotionally needy as well as being hard-headed! So you also need to build in two good outings every day until he is at least four or five. A half-hour walk minimum, and a trip to a dog park or play date. Every Day. It gives him something to think about the rest of the day while he's napping.
If you try to get by with just fetch for exercise, the dog will become obnoxious in a short time.

Should i use a crate or a puppy playpen for my Jack russell puppy?

Hi
I am getting a JRT soon and i need to know what i should get!

You should only crate a dog for 3 hours a day- any more is not healthy for them, they will get aggresive, you put your self inside a crate and see how long you like it.
If you do not have a safe yard for the animal, a warm home, shade, and water- do not get it/
remember a dog needs to be walked everyday!!!!! and you might want to get some training books or dvds to train your puppy.
