Training Jack Russells

how would i know if my female jack russell is having puppies?

Normal gestation for dogs is 63 days, give or take 5 days.

She will be restless, turning circles, whining, panting, scratching at bedding. ….If you offer her a tasty treat she will refuse it. Then you know she's gonna pop em out shortly…

Provide a warm place to put the puppies as they are born, such as a basket with a hot water bottle ( you can use a 2 liter bottle filled with hot water, and covered by a towel) or heating pad. As she is delivering the next pup, put the already born ones in the warm box or basket.. If the puppies get too hot they will "scream" and cry, and if too cold they will whimper. Make sure that you do not take the basket out of mother's sight, since this would upset her and interfere with the remainder of whelping. If the puppies are hungry, they will make "angry" cries.

It may be necessary, in the long haired breeds, to comb out or preferably cut the hair around the mammary glands and nipples about a week in advance. Most bitches will start to shed some hair around the nipples about 2 weeks before whelping. The underside of the mother should be gently and thoroughly washed and rinsed clean before the whelping. Any abnormal discharges such as bloody milk, or greenish yellow pus in the milk coming from the nipples and mammary glands should be brought to the attention of your veterinarian.

Have iodine or suitable disinfectant on had for the opened end of the umbilicus on each puppy.

Some dental floss will work to tie around the base of the cord if its bleeding. Tie a knot 1/4 to 1/2 inches from the puppy's abdomen. Plenty of clean towels and a human nasal aspirator for nasal mucus removal are also handy to have.

A milk supplement and baby bottle may be needed, so have them ready.

my jack Russell is due to give birth any day but the puppies have stopped moving is this normal?

the puppies were moving about quite actively but in the last 12 hours i havnt felt them at all is this normal

Would call a vet - but space could be very tight in their now as their size increases close to their due date so this may inhibit movement.

i dont want my jack russell to have puppies?

i dont think i could handle seeing her in pain she is my baby..she comes every were with me. i cant bear thethought of her feeling pain ..why am i feeling this way
dog doctor why are you such a heartless creature why bother replyin if your gonna be pig ignorant

Hi, I work as a Veterinary Receptionist and feel that you may be a little scared regarding her feeling pain if she had an operation to spay her. This would obviously be the best choice and would also prevent her from having a womb infection later in life (pyometra) - which can prove life threatening and involve an major and complicated operation to remove the uterus. I would urge you to get her spayed at the earliest opportunity - this would also stop her coming into season and deter any male dogs from sniffing around your house. Best wishes, Sandie

What should I do about my little puppy Jack?

My dad is getting mad at Jack because he always poops in the house and he is getting so mad that he is thinking about selling him to someone he is so sick of him always pooping in the house and jumping up on people. How can I convince my dad that he should not sell my little puppy?
My little puppy is a beagle rat terrier, very cute!!!

Suggest doing group obedience training. Believe me, obedience training will make a world of difference. Make it a family event and suggest it will make your family bond. Also.. HOUSE TRAINING, HOUSE TRAINING, HOUSE TRAINING!! Never allow your dog to just eat when it wants, always set a schedule, allow it to eat and then take it out to use the restroom.

Also, check out this website and show it to your dad as well:

http://www.dogobedienceadvice.com/how_stop_dog_jumping.php
(It shows obedience tips on how to make your job stop jumping.)

This one shows house breaking techniques:

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/housebreaking.htm

Explain to him that your puppy just isn't a puppy that he is a part of your family and he needs a forever home. Tell him, just like you were a kid, you needed training and obedience lead and he didn't let you go, did he? :) Good luck and I hope things work out in your favor and Jack shapes up soon!

will these puppies work together? - westie and jack russell?

I want to buy two puppies to go in my new apt. - a white westie and a jack russell. someone told me to buy the puppy WITH the jack cuz bringin one in later won't work out - is that true? and will these two breeds get along? (if ur not familiar please "google" them first). thanks

There is no reason why any 2 dogs wont get on providing they are introduced and socialized properly. A word of warning if you have never had a dog before these 2 breeds perhaps are not the best idea - they are both "terrier" breeds which can mean they are extremely strong willed and do require a dedicated owner to laydown the rules initially and enforce them fairly including training classes, correct socialisation etc. They will continually try to push the boundaries you have set. Both breeds can be very excitable but more importantly snappy. Also the westie's are prone to skin conditions eg eczema they can be extremely frustating to treat and rarely curable therefore continually costly. The skin problems tend to be largely due to allergies to food types, pollens, dust mites etc - all the things you can't take away!
I am a vet nurse and see very few westie's that dont have bad skin make sure you get good insurance. But think carefully and do you really need 2 puppies at the same time? if you just had 1 it is more likely to develop a good relationship with you. Hope it helps

I'm thinking of getting two Jack Russell puppies, what combo is better? Two Bitches, Two Dogs or one of each?

I have 2 spayed female dogs and they get along fine. My first dog was 7 when I got my 2nd dog . The 2nd dog was a young puppy.

What are your tips for raising a Jack Russell puppy?

I am getting a Jack Russell puppy in 2 weeks. I have experience with Jack’s but not puppies. Any tricks of the trade or tips you could pass along from your experience would be great. I have done the research and spoken with owners. In some cases I get conflicting tips. I am interested in housebreaking, basic training, altering, socialization and anything else you can add.

Only one real suggestion that is something you know from having a Jack..EXERCISE EXERCISE…Also always start training for potty outside , no pads..easier for the both of you. And I am a freak about neutering and spaying so that’s a given in my book unless you show the dog. Socialize the dog as much as possible other dogs, cats, people, car rides, everything you can think to do at a a young age to help dog as it grows! The more socialization the better the dog!
Good luck with your new fur friend!

we have jack russell puppies going for 2nd jab tue and worming we have found now they have fleas can we treat?

them now or do we leave till after jabs

You don't need to wait to treat them for fleas, but get flea treatment from the vets, Frontline is the best, over the counter flea treatment is a waste of money, they don't work.

Is it normal for my Jack Russell Terrier to produce milk in her breats without having puppies?

She is 8 years old. Iv'e asked the vet about it but they told me that if she has never had puppies it sometimes happens and then goes away. She now has milk in her breasts all the time. Is something really wrong with her?

Yes ,she's still cycling(going into heat)
I'll tell you some thing:she's at very big risk of getting pyometra.Look it up on the web.
She should have been spayed a long time ago.Females that were never spayed or ever had puppies eventually get a very bad infection of the uterus.Sometimes you will see a dark and smelly pus leaking from underneath. If you see this run do not walk to the nearest Vet.It's very life-threatening.I would consult my vet any way about this even if she' not showing signs of pyometra.

anybody have pictures of an adult english bull terrier x jack russell?

Oh my! They're so cute! Looks like they'll resemble larger versions of a Jack Russel with the facial construction of the bull terrier! But who knows! They're quite lovely! Congratulations!
