Training Jack Russells

i have a jack-a-pug and im just wondering…?

he was really calm when we first got him, now he's biting everything and being really mean…i can't even pet him without him trying to bite me. he just lost a tooth so would it be because of the teething that he's like this?
and how big are they supposed to get?…
AND will he eventually calm down and be nicer and more like a pug?
oh, and also, how much water should i give him?….i've seen people say that they give a huge bowl so you dont have to fill it up as often…but eddie will just drink it all at once….
well i try to refill the water all the time….but he keeps drinking it all and then ends up throwing up..
and no he isn't neutered yet, hes only 5 months and outside is too cold to walk him…and vet said for him not to be with other dogs yet cuz he's too young =/

EDIT: The water consumption/throwing up is a concern and should be checked out by your vet. Does he vomit up food as well?
Unfortunately most vets are not trainers. Having terrier in his blood, the older your pup gets without socialization with other dogs, the harder it will be. As long as shots are up to date and there are no health concerns, it's highly recommended to start puppies socializing around 3 mos.
Suggest you consult a trainer for a 2nd opinion. Also since you said you feel your puppy's gotten 'mean', a trainer can evaluate your pups biting to help you determine if it's just normal rough play or if theres an issue of faulty temperament.

He's not being mean, he's playing!!!
You can teach him not to bite you, and give him toys that he can bite and play tug with. A lot of people think their dogs bite because of teething…..they chew because of teething…but biting while playing is instinctive….it's what mother nature gave them to 'practice' for the time when they must hunt for their food and defend themselves and their pack.
Since your dog needs to do neither, you just need to find some good outlets for his energy and 'instinct'. Jack and Pugs are both great dogs, and Jacks are known for their energy levels. If you give him the amount of exercise and attention he needs, eventually he will grow out of the 'get into everything' puppy mentality and calm down. It's also really important to teach him obedience now - another way to channel that energy into something productive and fun for both of you.
A group/puppy class is always a great idea for young pups….he may even get to have playtime with other pups that will wear him out a little bit for you. :^)

On his water, it's better to give him a limited amount at a time unless you must leave him alone for long periods. It will help you in housetraining if he doesn't get to fill his bladder to it's limit.

Good Luck with your pup!!!

does anyone else have a jug??(pug/jack russell)?

i have one. she thinks shes the queen of the world. she was hyper as a pup but she finally calmed down. she loves the rough up times though it gets her tired so she can fall asleep.
she also licks everything! does anyone elses do that?? or is it just mine?? she also sucks on our arms like its a pasifier. But shes still amazing. she thinks shes a person! tell me about yours…
she is very protective of her family so we keep her active to keep her fit. what do you do with your dog to keep him or her fit??

I have a Pug and a JRT. Looks like your Jug has both my dogs personality's. My pug is energetic but has calmed down more since we got Jack. Jack is dominant and doesn't share his treats. Pechocho (pug) licks everyone even the cat and even if she's hissing at him. They both love to play but I have to admit my Jack is a lot smarter than Pechocho. He got the "sit" command in like 5 minutes. Can I see a picture of her? I'm trying to picture what she looks like but I cant. gcancino@cox.net

Jugs (pug/jack russell)?

No not those jugs. I have a four month old Jug, and I was wondering if anyone else here does too. Do adult Jugs calm down?
i'm aware that as a puppy they have lots of energy, I was asking so that I can know what to expect in an adult

My sister has a Jug that's just over 1 year. She is so cute! She has calmed down a little, but she just got a puppy playmate. She really needed it. She has a lot of energy and this helps get some out–and leaves you alone. She still jumps really high–I don't think that will ever change!

My vet says my dog is overweight but how much should he weigh? He is a 4 yr old jack russell/ pug cross.?

It isn't a matter of pounds as much as appearance. A healthy dog should have a waistline visible when viewed from the top and side. The ribs should not protrude but be easily felt under a very thin padding of fat. The hip bones shouldn't protrude but should be felt easily with a slight padding between them. The spine should not be evident.

Jack Russell , Beagle or Pug????

I miss my dog who died 4yrs ago. so im getting a new one…maybe pug, beagle or jack russell..which r fun dogs energetic and easy to take care off not sensitive.i can take him anywhere i want. which has the longest life span?

I’d get a Jack Russell. Right now I have 6. I also have 2 beagles, and in the past I’ve owned a total of 9 beagles, and Lord knows how many Jrts(we breed, show, and work them… we’ve had a lot.)

Jrts can be hyper, energetic, loving, and loyal. They were highly intelligent dogs.

Beagles are energetic, but not quite as much as Jrts. They can also be very loving and loyal. From my experience they aren’t quite as intelligent as Jrts. But they’re pretty darn smart.

I wouldn’t go with a pug at all. Not to say they aren’t good dogs.. I love pugs… but for what your looking for, I’d have to say no.

To everyone who says Jrts are usually mean and are ankle biters.. thats just a stupid breed rumor. They usually aren’t. And trust me when I say so…. I’ve seen around 600 Jrts in my life. Not owned, but SEEN. Not on TV, or in pictures. But the real dog. About… 3 of them were aggressive. One was abused.

Its a FAULT for the Jrt to be human aggressive. They are working dogs.. and an aggressive dog in the working field causes trouble.

Not to say there aren’t aggressive Jrts.. there are.

I suggest getting one from a reputable breeder. They breed wisely, and socialize dogs.

I’ve owned, shown, worked, and studied Jack Russell Terriers for 9 years. Let me tell you, every day of those 9 years I thoroughly enjoyed and loved.

Hope that helps! Have a nice day!

Good dog with Pug/Jack Russel?

I have a Pug cross Jack Russel. She is 1 year 2 months at the moment.

What breed of dog would be suitable to introduce into the family?

Thanks.

Get a dog for yourself not for your dog. If you train them correctly, almost any breed or mutt could fit in with your other dog.

However, you'll want to look at what YOU want in a dog. Do you want a dog to spend hours grooming (or vaccuuming after)? Do you want a dog to jog with? Etc.

How can I get my pug to just relax?

I just recently adopted a 2 year old pug named Jack which is a dream come true for me to own a pug, but he's driving me up the wall. He is peeing on everything and won't lay still. I can't just follow him around to make sure he doesn't pee and the only time he lays still is when we are sleeping. But everytime he runs around I live in constant fear that he is going to pee on something else. I love him to death, but at this point I'm saying it's either my house or him. We have a 5 year old lab who is just wonderful. Although now, she is running around with him and constantly biting him on the chest and neck(not hard, but nibbling), but she won't relax now and she was always such a calm dog. He also will not stay out of her crotch. His face is constantly buried in her. We are getting him fixed around the 1st, but I need to know if there is something I can do to calm down my household. The peeing, humping and all together chaos that is going on!

Have you ever watched the show the Dog Whisperer? I would recomend the website. Sounds like he needs a lot of exercise (outside walks) and discipline that you follow through with each time. Neutering him will help a bit but he needs 30-40 min. of exercise a day. Then when he is tired it is best to train him.. he will relax and be submissive (you want a submissive dog). Try the website - good luck!
