We adopted a jack russell (parsons) last May when he was 10mnths old. When he plays tag with a rope toy, he growls, is it ok for him to growl and i have read that they shouldn't? Thanks
Yes of course it's OK, he's just pretending you are a dog and he's inviting you to join the game. So long as he doesn't nip you, it's just a happy growl. He's a terrier, that's what they do!

I don't know much about most individual breeds…
They are essentially the same breed — due to infighting among breed enthusiasts, the names have changed — The UKC-recognized, short-legged variety of the beasties used to be called the "Russell Terrier", while the longer-legged, AKC-recognized variety was called the "Jack Russell Terrier". A few years ago, the breeders representing the UKC version apparently won the right to use the name "Jack Russell" in court, and the AKC version had to be changed to the "Parson Russell" — I think that was the deal.
In any case, they were both named after the same guy — Parson John ("Jack") Russell — and both were originally based on his dogs.
I'll look for more info…ADDED:
Here's an extremely thorough explanation on all of the differences:

More discussion of the "Russell Terrier":

Hope this helps!

You hear of short v shaped ears and drop ears? are these to different. Short legged jack russell ears look slightly longer than a parsons jack russell.
Yes. JRT's come in all different sizes and coats. That includes the ears too.

She has two meals a day and has treats during the day too. The problem is that we have a great deal of trouble getting her to eat her meals. She wont eat mixer so we give her tinned dog meat by itself for a day and then for a couple of days we give her dry complete food to get some fibre into her and its good for her teeth. We give her some dry complete food as her treats or some rawhide or gravy bones, things like that. She will eat at many treats as she can get. With her meals though it is different. We can put her breakfast down in the morning and if she touches it at all, it might be about 6pm which makes it impossible to give her a dinner time meal too. Somedays though she wont eat her breakfast meal until 11pm. There is no consistency in her eating habits. We didnt have her as a pup and so didnt really have much information on her about what food she likes so we just had to start from scratch with her with her food. She doesnt seem to like tinned dog food but she
isnt as bad with her dry food although she never seems happy with what we give her. She is very healthy although occasionally she has a bit of loose poo. So I was wondering if anybody can suggest anything that she could eat instead of dog food that is healthy and fibrous for her. She likes a treat of some breakfast cereal occasionally, would it be ok to give her muesli or something on a regular basis? I do realise that the raisins would have to be picked out, or some bran?
Decent and helpful answers only please. If you cant say anything sensible then please dont bother. By the way she is a Parson Russell Terrier.
First off, some dogs (mostly smaller breeds) just don't get hungry enough to eat schedualed meals on time, every time.
So they can be hard to get on a feeding schedual, which is why a lot of people let their dogs "graze". Which if your dog can be trusted with food out all the time, this is the easiest answer.
If not:
Ok, first thing is you want to get your dog on a diet with no fillers if they already arent. Dogs that dont eat as often still need the same amount of nutrients and fillers will keep your dog from getting as much as they need. I feed blue buffalo food, its all organic and has no fillers.
You also cant let them over eat! Read the packaging or talk to your vet about the appropriate amount of food for your dog daily and don't go over it. If you over feed a dog one meal they will be more likely to be late on the next.
It might sound mean but you also cant let your dog decide its going to eat when it wants. When you put the food in the dish you need to set a time limit, if the dog has not touched the food within maybe 30minutes, pick up the dish and put it away. Then just put it back down at the next meal. That way your dog won't have the option to be picky, and it will eat when it is hungry but on your schedual.
Secondly, no more treats or rawhide. Unless your dog does something that merits a treat don't give them any. Also rawhide expands when wet, so when your dog eats a bunch of it, it will fill them up quickly and they will be less likely to eat their normal food. Treats can be worked back into the diet once they are eating normally.

my dog was lost for six days in saguaro national park, tucson AZ. my sister was watching him while i was out of the country and by chance upon my return i went into the desert and found him. he was fine for about three weeks and then he came down with a cough (the vet said it was kennel cough; yet he has all current shots), i had a dog before with kennel cough and this cough was diiferent. over the next couple of weeks he became lethargic and then lost control while walking or standing with his motor skills - as if very drunk. i went back to the vet and had him checked for heartworm (negative). he then started to have an eye discharge and yet - he still had no fever. i asked about valley fever; but the vet looked at the x-ray they took for kennel cough and there were no signs (no blood test though). it is now two months and he still has the cough and is getting worse with his breathing and walking: any ideas?
Hi there. Sorry to hear about your dog, but thats great you got him back. I lived in Scottsdale, Arizona for 19 years, up until last year, and to me this sounds exactly like Valley Fever. You need to get the opinion of another vet. This dog was likely exposed to it while he was in the desert. Here is a website explaining all the effects of Valley Fever:
http://www.vfce.arizona.edu/Content/Documents/Valley%20Fever%20in%20Dogs%20for%20PDF.pdf
Like I said, definately get the opinion of another vet. I've worked with many rescues and have seen Valley Fever manifest itself in many different ways, and your dog is displaying many of the symptoms. Good luck

So I have a Parson Russel (same as a Jack Russel only taller). She is VERY hipper and uses a LOT of energy. Thankfully I started early trainer her how to control her energy. The key is to let her get out all her energy in positive games and training so that she knows where it is okay and where it is not. She runs laps in my yard all the time. It is soo funny! It is like the energy never stops but I cant lie I love how playful she is and the fact that she can play with dogs three times her size better than those her size due to her energy level.
My only issue now is I’m looking for some good dog food for her. I am on a budget so I cant pay for $50 bags of food but I am willing to pay an average amount. Due to the fact that she uses a lot of energy she has issues gaining weight. I feed her three times a day (Mid day just started a few weeks ago just not as much as the morning and night meals) plus treats for training. Yet her bones still show like she doesn’t get any food. I understand that her bread is very thin but I’m a little worried about how thin she is. She has her times where she is at a good weight and even though she is thin her bones dont show like a dog that no one cares for. But if she gets too much play time (which I dont see ANYTHING wrong with) her bones start showing very sickly well.
Is there any food that will help her keep up with how much fat she burns?
Oh and one last important note she has a very weak stomach. She isn’t that picky of eater but her stomach cant handle table food AT ALL or cheaply made food (not cheap food just the ones that are made with a lot of processed stuff). So for those of you wanting to feed her some table food to help her gain weight that wont work. I’ve already tried that a few times and I didn’t like the after math at all. I felt soo bad for her
There is one dog food that I got from Walmart that she likes and helped her gain weight a little and didn’t make her sick after eating it BUT then she couldn’t go to the bathroom. So I had to stop using it. Now she is back to skin and bones with her puppy food.
It is like there is no happy place for her. If she can eat it, she cant gain weight and if she can gain weight with it she cant eat it since she gets sick.. Please help me!
Roxy will be a year old in Nov
I am a registered JRTCA breeder and I think I can help you with your dog. She may have worms, even if you can't see them. This is one of the reasons a dog has trouble processing their food, losing weight, and being fussy.
First I would buy a wormer (not expensive) from the pet store. Safeguard is a very good one, or you can get pyrantel pamoate. Worm her 2 times - 2 weeks apart.
As for the dogfood, there is a very good dog food called Eagle pack It is quite expensive, but there is good news. They made a dogfood sold in feed stores called Prism. It is exactly the same thing (the representative for Eagle told me) It is about $26 for 40lb. Get the Orange bag it is their Performance formula, or get puppy formula. Increase her intake and reduce her activity. I would feed her 3/4 Cup twice a day. and even a lunch just until the weight comes on her.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions.
I have also included a link to the JRTCAs website. The Parson actually came from the terriers registered at the JRTCA.
The Jack Russell standard is from 10 inches at the shoulder to 15 inches.
The Parson standard is from 12 inches to 15 inches. Most Jack Russell are around 13 inches tall

I have kept dogs and chickens before (Mongrel and Lasso Apso) and had no problems but wondered if it is a particular trait with a jack russells. Also are they known for chasing cats if living in same house???
Russell are terriers which are bred to kill rabbits and the like,
the name comes from terre which means of the earth ie terre fermer

Im fairly certain that a Parson is just a long -legged variation of a JRT.
My dog Cosmo is a 4 year old Parson or JRT… He has long legs.
The woman I bought him from was a vet and told me he was a JRT.
He also has one black toenail. He is super sweet and really really smart. Im just confused about what to call him?

If you need any more pictures let me know.
He is still a rather small dog, but he’s taller than the average JRT.
Oh I also think the woman said his mother was smooth coated and his father was broken coated
He's a parson jack russell and he's gorgeous.. I have a gorgeous small long legged girl here she is http://www.faceparty.com/b1mb088
Parsons are Long legged and more than 60% white, also Parson jack russell are identifed by kenel club where as the standard one isn't.

well appart from having the papers !
i have a jack russell x and ive been told that hes a parsons…but the breeder said that hes got like a 8th patterdale in him…something to do with his grandpa having patterdale in him…now i know theres a lot of different jack russells and a lady said to me is he full jack…and i said well hes got parson in him ? and she said all jacks have parson in them ? so i dont know if thats true? then i found out that parsons have distinctive spots on them…my jacks just tan and white….hes got a full tan head…a big spot on the side of his belly…and a another big spot next to that 1 but its near his tail and bum…ive been on the net and looked at pictures and hes almost the exsact same as the parsons ! hes almost the same as this http://www.top-dogs-names.com/jack-russell-terrier.html but hes got 2 tan spots near his bum and belly…and only a little bit white going up from his nose to his head ? he dont look nothing like the patterdale !
hes not that tall! and hes quite stocky and muscly…but he does run around alot !
i dont wanna breed him…and i dont care thats hes a mutt ! im just confused of what jack he is lol parsons or patterdale ?!
no i didnt get the papers ! but ive been told that all jacks have parsons in them ?! is there anyone who knows about the jack russell breed ??? thanx
oh and thats how you tell if they are parsons by there distinctive markings.I.E the full tan head and the big spots !
all JR are descended from the parsons jack russel that much is true, and all other jack russells have a little of this and that to make the diversity of coat and size
BUT
that was several generations ago and the breed now breeds true
what is recognised as a PARSONS JR now is the long legged type
http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/82
these are the only type recognised by the kennel club
if the dog is 1/8th patterdale it is not a full JR, it is a crossbreed
the only true breed JR is a fully historied and papered JRXJR showing full historied and papered JRXJR ancestory
but then who cares? love him for what he is, as im sure you do, and he will be a bundle of fun for you for many years
