We have a Great Pryneese that we have to guard our goats. We've had her about 6 months and she is in heat. We also have an older Bird dog/Lab mix that is almost 7 years old. The older dog keeps trying to kill my Jack when he even gets near her fence.
Ok, the great pryneese is a guard dog for my goats. The bird dog lab mix is the guard dog for the rest of my place. The Jack Russell came with the marriage. The only time the dogs have fought is now when the female is in heat. I have tried to keep them all away from each other. I don't have a problem with them humping anything, just the insistance on being near the female and male dominancy due to the heat factor. I didn't get them fixed before because we didn't have a female, until 6 months ago.
Yes this should help, but there may be more to this than that. Jack Russells and many other dogs are pack oriented. They often will get along with one other dog but a group of three or more dogs could be a problem. The JRT is a big dog in a small dogs body. They will not back down. So if you can't keep them apart this could be trouble.

I went to the Humane Society yesterday and picked out….(well actually She picked me out!!) 2 year old Jack Russell mix. She is quite small (10 pounds?) looks like a Jack, but has a smooth face, rather than fuzzy. Her given name at the shelter is Lucky, she didn't seem to really respond to that though. I would like to rename her if possible.
Any suggestions?

this kind of dog may shed more so then some breeds (such as poodles and shih tzus) but less so than others (dachsounds, samoyeds). truth is, all dogs shed, we lose hair too. however, if you brush him on a regular basis then he won't shed as badly.
