Training Jack Russells

I would love to give a free jack russell pup or jack russell cross a good home (northern ireland) any advice?

THANX MOONDOG

where are you in Northern Ireland. the USPCA at benvardin ballymoney currently have a 2yr old jack russell, I was up the other day he was gorgeous, if you are closer to the carryduff shelter they will transport him down NCDL in antrim and the Rainbow Re-homing Centre in Eglinton may have a few too. they are so common that unfortunately they turn up for re-homing all too often. It may take a few months but you'll definitely get one. Remember though you have to pay £75 to pick him up. That's the fee for his injections, and vets procedures. Trust me, you'll have that paid out anyway to a vet yourself if you got a free puppy. Good-luck

What kind of jack/cross brace could hold a piece for welding inside a 55 gal drum?

Pieces on end can be held with wide jaw vicegrips but not in the mid part, not long enough. I envision an adjustable screw set(name?) for the 22 in span. Many 2" wide 10" long pieces. Perhaps small jack/adjuster with pole or rod to the other side? Any ideas or experiences? There are lots of clamps to externally hold things together at Home Depot but not any I saw that could expand out to hold such pieces inside a barrel.

Converted trigger clamp maybe.

Reverse the jaws and Presto!, they push instead of squeeze.

G'luck!

I have jack russell cross chihuahua puppies and i don’t know if I want them to get their tales taken off. Help?

The mom to the puppies doesn’t have her tail and she looks fine but some of the pictures that I have seen of these kind of puppies they still have theirs and they look good too…should I or shouldn’t I get them docked???

Fro all those that are saying its cruel. Honestly..

We dock our Jrt’s tails. WHY? Because they hunt underground. Left at natural length it could break in the small spaces. We also use it as a handle.. so it can’t be too short.

For all lthose giving sane reason, thank you.

Also, it isn’t illegal everywhere. Not in the USA yet, I don’t think.

when will my jack russle cross calm down?

don't be surprised by jack Russel and this Question im asking because it sounds silly because jack Russel's are existed and hyper dogs!! but She is crossed with a yorkie her mum was a Yorkshire terrier and her dad was a jack Russel he is medium-sized noting to big at all,she was the runt of the litter(smallest out of them all) SO WHEN WILL SHE CALM DOWN ?? she is 6 months

Oh boy.
6 months is still considered VERY much a BABY.
She still has another 2-3 years before you'll notice a big decrease in hyperactivity.
It could also never calm down. Jack Russells are known to still be VERY hyperactive at 10 and 11 years old.

What should I do with my adopted jack-russel cross?

We adopted 2 small dogs 2 years ago, one male and one female. The male is a jack russel and likely shih-tzu cross and is quite low energy. The first week when we got them, the male was sitting with me(he had been let out often) he and urinated all over me. He nudged us for attention a lot, would scratch and squirm whenever we tried to put him on his back - we decided to do research and teach him that my bf and I were the pack leaders. We read books and watched The Dog Whisperer and got advice from family. We were able to train him properly on a leash, lay on his back on command and get him to eat on a schedule (he shook and starved himself at first). Things were little better except whenever left alone (be it 10 mins or 2 hours) he would defecate on the floor and find my underwear and eat/shred it. He still always fought for dominance and lately he's been defecating in his kennel and in the house a lot; probably 4 days a week. Should we put him down? we've tried everything
Some more details (the allowed characters were short)

- We leave the house 2x a day 5x a week for work for only 4 hours at a time.
- He stays in his kennel with the female when we leave, because after much experimenting he does bad things when left out of it when alone
- We've taken him to the vet and tried anti-anxiety/depressant medication and besides it being impossible to get him to take it (with a treat/peanut butter even) he did not respond to it
- Whenever at someone elses house, literally left alone for even 5 seconds he will poop/pee on the floor somewhere
Yes he is fixed.

He came from a home where he was left alone for 12-24 hours and never taught right from wrong in the house. And yes I'm sure it is my fault that he acts the way he does, I'm just giving some background info. He's also 4 years old.

rocketgrrl, thank you for your reply. I think perhaps this is the method I will continue to try training him in.
They both get their fair share of attention and we avoid favoring the girl over him, because that would make him even more upset and hurt.

Yes, they are both 100% house trained and they are let outside twice in the morning and 3 times in the afternoon/evening.

goodingmargaret, that is definitely what I have believed him to be doing is getting back at me, I just wasn't so sure if it was a common response from an upset dog. I will work on his separation anxiety issues some more.

Also, his person is now definitely my bf, though he definitely loves his old one too.

Another side question, is that they have toys to play with in their crate though they never seem to express any interest, even when we try to play with the toys with them other times. So, we often give them dentabones or other things to chew on, but the Male will only ever guard his treat and never eat it. They both get the treats at the same time and they have seperate places to eat them but he won't still. Any idea why?

DO NOT put him down! First of all, he needs his own space. Buy him his own kennel. Second, it sounds like he needs something to do. Try finding a class that teaches agility. It may be as simple as being bored and wanting extra attention. As far as the underwear goes, don't leave it where he can get to it. Jack Russels are very intelligent dogs, they need to be kept busy.

We are thinking of buying a Jack Russell cross. What stuff should we know?

Hi there

We are thinking of buying a Jack Russell cross and decided we want to go thru a pet shop as we know they will let us know everything we need to know.

What would a pet shop give us? What else do we need to know?

Thanks in advance. Best answer will be given today!
Obviously the first 3 people have answered this haven't been told that these dogs need professional obdience training

Please, please consider looking at your local animal shelter before you buy a dog at the pet shop. There a ton of wonderful dogs there that need great homes, and at our local shelter there are a ton of jack russell mixes. Also, the experience of going to the shelter is great for anyone interested in getting a dog. You see what a big commitment it is and where they end up if you don't fulfill your end of the commitment.

if jack crossed a road at 20mph witha 6 foot long car; the road is 200 ft long.how long will it take to cross?

We need to know how wide the road is. If it's a two lane road, it would only take about a second to cross.
