What size "Gentle Leader" should i get for my 6 month old akita chow mix?

I was going to buy a gentle leadr to control the pulling of Tony, my puppy. But i'm not sure what size to get since ive been getting mixed information online.

Why would you purchase a head halter for a puppy? This is when you should focus on *training.* Do not rely on a tool to do the work for you.

Here's a helpful article about teaching loose leash walking:

All dogs should be taught to walk well on a flat, normal collar. However, I can understand if you'd like more reinforcement for the sake of safety. My 160-pound dog typically walks very well, but I still walk him in an Easy Walk Harness. This is a simple body harness. Unlike other harnesses, though, you attach the leash in the front.

This is the harness that is almost always recommended by the multitude of mastiff owners I know. If we can control mastiffs, you can control an Akita/Chow puppy. (And I'm seriously the most unathletic teenage girl around.) Just plant your feet and center yourself. Be a tree.
(Also, if it makes any difference to you, both the Easy Walk Harness and the Gentle Leader Headcollar are produced by Premier.)

If you're insistent about using the Gentle Leader, why don't you have someone fit it for you at the store? Go to a place like PetSmart or something. An employee or the store's trainer should be able to help you. It's their job to be knowledgeable about their products.

What do you recomentd as alternative to a gentle leader?

My Springer Spaniel has a very sensitive snout and the gentle lead bothers his skin. However, Because of his side I do need a alternative that will still allow me to have lots of control.

Two collars and leashes — a regular neck collar and leash, and the Gentle Leader with the second leash. That way most of the time you can lead by the neck collar but you can still control the head when you really need to. At the same time, work on training him to walk properly on a leash so that you can eventually do away with the head collar.

I tried an Easy Walk Harness and personally I did not care for it. My dog was a stubborn puller, and the Easy Walk Harness only made him walk like a crab.

Dog Gentle Leader not so Gentle?

I bought a Gentle Leader for my 7 month old pup.my dog gets so spastic with this thing on he shakes head he walks sideways he rolls around he wont walk he trys to bite it ….Its miserable it makes me miserable and him miserable…How can i get him to walk normally with it

I would start giving him treats while you put it on and while you’re walking to show him that it is a good thing. You could also do as others said and put it on him for a few minutes a day while you’re in the house and give him treats and play with it so he associates it with good things. It probably isn’t hurting him, he is just annoyed that he can’t get it off. I wouldn’t ever use a prong collar on my dogs, because they learn not to pull by getting poked in the neck with two metal points which to me is inhumane.

Gentle Leader or Harness?

i have a german shepherd/rottweiler mix and she makes walking difficult. She keeps jumping and pulling and is over hypered and i need some help walking her. The regular collar is not a good idea so i'm looking for something different. I've heard great things about the gentle leader but the harness (the one that goes under her body) seems more firm and easier to control the dog with. It's a heavy dog apprx. 70lbs so which one will work best for me?
thanx

Gentle Leader. If you want to be pulled around then use the harness. With that you are letting them use their WHOLE body weight to pull you compared to pulling from the neck w/ a collar. A gentle leader will let YOU be the one that controls the walks, it makes them pay attention to you. I've seen heavier dogs walk just fine w/ the gentle leader. Avoid the harness.

Any experience with dogs getting used to gentle leaders?

I have a lab and a golden retriever. Both are very sweet dogs, but both will pull like there's no tomorrow when excited (by skateboards, cats, rabbits, etc.). The vet and trainer recommended I use a gentle leader, which has helped tremendously (I had already been using the pronged collar, which didn't bother my lab at all). The only problem is, they HATE the gentle leaders. They dread my putting them on them before the walk, and are constantly stopping and trying to rub the gentle leaders off. I know it's not a problem with the fit, as the trainer fitted them accordingly, and I've made some adjustments myself to try to make them more comfortable. I figured it would just take time for them to get used to them, but after TWO MONTHS, the leaders are still bothering them. Has anyone had a similar experience, and if so, what did you do to make it better or how long did it take for your dog to finally get used to them?

Only thing to be said is lots of practice and patience. Its hard for the pet to learn to as this is new to them. But the gentle leads are best for dogs, rather than leashes.

Please… whats the difference between a gentle leader head colland and a….?

Please can anyone tell me the difference between:

. A Halti Leader Head Collar

AND

. Gentle Leader Head Collor

thankyou in advance xxx
and also which is better.

There is a minor difference in the chin and connections. Gentle leader will stay on and fit better than a Halti.( at least in my breed, with a weirdly proportioned head)
But, after having used both of them, I was thrilled to find the Canny Collar. It is better in so many ways.
Here it is:
http://www.cannyco.com/
I couldn't believe the ease and effectiveness of this collar.
I disagree with the statement that they don't 'train'..They do, indeed. They are a training tool that I find helpful with out of control shelter dogs, and my own highly prey driven hounds.
I am a senior, and can't risk my ol back on a tugging or suddenly lurching big dog. When used properly, these are good training aids.
I can keep my show-dog-in-training, from putting his head down to sniff or grab dropped bait, and keep his focus in a crowd..The Canny collar keeps his head in proper position for showing..( Gentle Leader does not) When he is back on a show lead..he is much better than before.

Has any one had a bad experiance with a gentle leader?

I work at a vet clinic, and I just went to an animal behavior seminar, and they talked about gentle leaders. I haven't tried it on my dog, but everyone that attended said they have had good experiences with them. The Doctor who held the seminar said that usually if the dog is not responding, or if it is stressful on them that it is either not fitted right, or it is not being used properly. Try to find some videos online that will show you how to adjust it properly, and how to use it correctly. It is meant for soft gentle corrections, not harsh quick corrections.

Why is a Gentle Leader better than a Harness?

if you are worrying about a dog pulling the gentle leader does tend to stop it while a regular standard harness just gives the dog a better ability to tow you down the road. Now there are some harnesses marketed to stop/limit pulling and they (I'm told) do work (woldn't know don't have a dog who pulls) but you have to be carefull you don't lump all harnesses togher (which many people do)
