Training Jack Russells

how can i stop my cane corrso puppy from biting my jack Russel mix puppy when she has a bone?

i have 2 10 week old dogs and today they both had bones an the cane corrso finished hers first then decided she wanted the jack Russel’s bone and bit her hard and the jack is hurt how can i stop this

Both those puppies are dominant, tenacious breeds.

Neither one is going to give up on anything very often.

A pecking order will eventually be established but it will be through several knock down, drag out , bloody battles. The JRT will lose but may get badly hurt before he gives in. The Cane will win because of weight and jaw strength.

As they are still puppies, I would seperate them when feeding and handing outtreats etc. or one will always be doing without - the larger pup will win.

Why did you decide to pick these 2 breeds as room mates?

I have Jacks but i feel sorry for yours.

How long a day should jack russells be excerised daily?

I'd say a jack russell should be walked for at least an hour a day, those little dogs have a lot of energy as you probably know.

I have a puppy jack russel and she always rubbs her tummy over the carpet can you tell me why?

My female dachshund did that for the whole time I had her. Sometimes they just have itchy skin, check out her skin and see if she has dry skin or any rashes.

Do jack russells get on ok with cats?

I have been asked if I could rehome a jack russell puppy it's crossed with a springer spaniel but I have a cat do they get on genarally with cats

If this is a puppy, then it could be integrated with cats, my grandmother has a purebred jack russell, and it gets on really well with my cousins cat (my cousin lives just along the street and the cat goes to my gran's during the day). They even play with each other, which i thought would never happen between the two species.

Her parents, on the other hand, are working dogs at my mum's friend's stable yard and would attack and kill a cat without hesitation.

So basically, there is no definite yes or no. If it is a young puppy, then go for it, but if it is a bit older, then it may be best to let it go to another home, as both jack russels and spanels have ahunting instinct , so a cat may not be the best companion for this dog.

Add: RACHEL, it looks like me and you are in the same boat. Probably the two most informative answers given to this question, and yet we both have two thumbs down as i write this. I think that morons see the orange label and give us a thumbs down just to try and get some sort of thrill and make themselves look better! Really irritating!

What size "Gentle Leader" should i get for my 6 month old akita chow mix?

I was going to buy a gentle leadr to control the pulling of Tony, my puppy. But i'm not sure what size to get since ive been getting mixed information online.

Why would you purchase a head halter for a puppy? This is when you should focus on *training.* Do not rely on a tool to do the work for you.
http://www.positivedogs.com/articles/head_halters.html

Here's a helpful article about teaching loose leash walking:
http://ahimsadogtraining.com/blog/leash-walking/

All dogs should be taught to walk well on a flat, normal collar. However, I can understand if you'd like more reinforcement for the sake of safety. My 160-pound dog typically walks very well, but I still walk him in an Easy Walk Harness. This is a simple body harness. Unlike other harnesses, though, you attach the leash in the front.

http://www.puplife.com/collections/no-pull-dog-harnesses/products/premier-easy-walk-harness
This is the harness that is almost always recommended by the multitude of mastiff owners I know. If we can control mastiffs, you can control an Akita/Chow puppy. (And I'm seriously the most unathletic teenage girl around.) Just plant your feet and center yourself. Be a tree.
(Also, if it makes any difference to you, both the Easy Walk Harness and the Gentle Leader Headcollar are produced by Premier.)

If you're insistent about using the Gentle Leader, why don't you have someone fit it for you at the store? Go to a place like PetSmart or something. An employee or the store's trainer should be able to help you. It's their job to be knowledgeable about their products.

We have an aggressive dachshund. he and our other male dog (jack russel) keep fighting over nothing. ideas?

Our jack russel was just diagnosed with diabetes and the vet said that they put off a different scent and that may have something to do with it. They have fought numerous times today already and the dacshund will lock his jaw on the ear of the jack russel and my husband has to pry him off.

It has nothing to do with any different scent that jack russell may be admitting. It has to do with being alpha. Dogs are pack animals and have an alpha drive. Usually the drive to be alpha is different in most dogs and they can settle out who will be alpha and who will be betta. Sometimes both dogs have equal drive and cannot settle it out. This is very rare. My generalized guess, based on 50 years of training experience, is that your dogs are not socialized, nor are they trained to any reliability nor do they respect you as alpha. This all leads to the dogs not understanding their place in a pack. You at the top, then the dogs. These dogs need training, and you need education about dogs and dog behavior. I see this all the time, and the owners always blame it on the dogs, when they have actually (through ignorance) set the stage for the problem. Obedience classes, which are really for you but the dog also attends.

I have a jack russel and am wondering what type of dog gets along best with a jack russel?

Im thinking of getting a golden retriever, but do jack russels like them?

as long as you introduce them the right way **with the jack tired and outside of the home** let them walk together before entering your house they will be fine

Do you think a 1 1/2 Bengal cat will get along with a Pomeranian Puppy or Jack Russel Terrier Pup?

Will their personality traits mix well together? My cat Titan loves to play all the time, but she is selfish when u try to take her favorite toy and sometimes she just wants to sleep.

Hi Iani… so long as the introductions are done correctly which is to gradually introduce the two over time there shouldn't be any difficulties with the cat and puppy to get along.

Here's a website which explains how to introduce dogs to cats: http://www.thecatsite.com/Behavior/50/Introducing-Cats-to-Dogs.html

I can i stop my Dalmatian puppy being too excited like my Jack Russells are?

All puppies are exciteable and high energy. That's the delight of having a puppy. Dalmations are also a high energy dog. They were bred to run behind carriages for hours on end.

I hope you are walking ALL of your dogs. You have two very active working breeds with VERY high exercise requirements. Both breeds need to go for long walks and Jack Russells especially need to have a job.

Exercised dogs are calm and happy dogs.

Jack russel puppy 11 weeks old?

hi all my male jack russel has been trying to hump my kids legs arms we tell him no but he dont stop any ideas wat i could do to stop him b4 he gets older thanks

when you get dogs neutered/spayed they usually stop humping everything. Also at 11 weeks, he probably doesn't know what "no" means yet, so you have to attach an action like spraying him with a little water from a spray bottle or shaking a can of pennies. It's pretty much normal for puppies to hump anything they can. My dogs who are also jack russels used to hump each others heads sometimes, it was weird. they're older now and they never do that anymore.
