Does anybody know if Petland or Petcetera sells the Halti or the Gentle leader. I am working with my lab cross puppy to not pull and have heard good things about the use of these accessories assisting in the training process.
Do any of you have personal experience with either of these? Which would you recommend?
Oh I was so mad yesterday, ok so I bout the gentle leader for whopping $20 and I go to Walmart yesterday and here’s the exact same thing just an off brand and only $7, so my advice to u is to go to Walmart and see if the gentle leader is there in ur area, I like the gentle leader

She is getting better. We have her using those pee pads that you lay down on the floor. She uses them and she is usually really good about it, but every few days of the week she decides she wants to go on the carpet. What can I do? I think we have tried everything. We let her out for 1 hour every few hours so she can get it all out of her system but there is ALWAYS more. The problem is, is that she is a jack russel so they are very stubborn and don't care. So we have to put a baby gate in a little room so we can make sure if she goes atleast it's not all over the carpet it's only in one space. If I don't fix this problem soon my parent are going to take away my puppy. Please help!
P.S. We use loud noises and spray her with water when she is about to go but she still keeps going.
We had a jack-russel for 13 years before we had to put her down.
Are you planning on having her go outside to the bathroom? Do you have a yard she can run in freely?
If so take her outside and follow her around as she plays. To get her use to going outside you should move the pee pad closer and closer to the door every day.
Wash your carpet with a spray from a pet store that removes the smell of urine or like cats she'll be more tempted to go there.
On the crate training front, I completely agree. I had Pumpkin [my 2 year old lab, collie, retriever mix] crate trained by 3 months. My parents broken her small plastic crate so we bought this metal one that was a bit larger. Since it was bigger than she was at the time she had room to goto the bathroom away from her bed, so that set her back a little. But she grew into it and there's no problems.
But when Mandy [deceased jack russel] was a pup she howled and whined for HOURS in her crate, never wanted to be left alone. Eventually she grew out of it but ya, a bit of a nightmare. But if you throw a blanket over the cage they'll calm down just don't talk too loud or make alot of noise around your pup while in the cage.
You'll have to keep the crate next to you for the first while so your pup sees you and knows it's alright.
Put you pup on a leash and take it outside to pee don't let it play until it goes to the bathroom. Praise praise praise.
Spraying with water only works for cats=) My brother[years ago] bought this little remote that emitted a high pitch noise that only animals could hear. We used it to stop the dogs from chasing the barn cats and getting into the garbage.
You can always goto a pet store [I much prefer the little and local stores not the big box ones] the owners/workers know alot about pets and can give you tips. I mean they helped my my parents and I to raise 16 "oops" puppies.

hey um i bought a 13 week old jack russell, he was like any puppy just needed some traning and tought stuff like not to pee in the house stuff like that. When he bit my 6 year old brother i would hit him multiple times because when i hit him just once he kept doing it. so when i started to him more like multiple times, he is becoming visouse but now I tried something. no hitting and i gave him so treats and love…. and he stopped biting and grouly at me. could he be stopping because i showed him love? < thats my question
Yes,maybe he's been hit on before.I hate to burst your bubble though but that's what puppies do!You got at least another year of that to look forward to.Sounds like your doing good though. You just need to have a lot of love and PATIENCE!I can't stress patience enough. Also, you might want to get him some raw hides. All puppies are teething at that age and need plenty of stuff to chew on.

i live with my partner and we got an 8 week old jack russel puppy hes pretty good apart from a few things. 1 he still wees and poos on the carpet and did a wee on the bed this morning i just put him on it for 2 seconds to put my jeans on. We have paper on the kitchen flloor at the back door which he never uses and we let him have the run of the garden which he does his business in and we always praise him and treat him if he does it outside and say no firmly and put him on his paper if he does it in doors 2 he chews things but not all the time the worst is my dressing gown in the morning. 3 if were down stairs and we go up to the toilet and he left on his own he cries and i took him up with me when i had a bath and he cried then and tried to jump in i just took him up cos hed been on his own all night. When we go to bed he sits on our lap and we settle hikm then carry him into the kitchen in his bed where he slleps and settle him again and he slleps through to morning. How can i kerb the little things he does wrong before its too late
He’s very young so you need to be firm in your approach but also gentle. Get some of those special pads that give off a certain smell to encourage dogs to wee on them and gradually move it closer to the back door.
the chewing is due to teething which can go on til he’s 18 mths old and could also be due to boredom.
Give him a well wrapped up warm hot water bottle to sleep with and maybe a ticking clock in his bed too as this will mimic his mother and her heartbeat. All pups will cry initially as they miss their mother and they are pack animals so naturally would never be left alone. However you have to make the pup fit into your lifestyle so tough love is essential here.
Good luck.

He stares in the air as if there is something there and he will jump and try to eat/bite. The thing is that, there is NOTHING there!! He never done this before until a week ago. And he does it so often, at least 30 times+ a day… We tried to see if there's something in his eyes that might confused him with his visual. But his eyes looks fine. Is this normal? Do I need to take him to vet for further analysis?
Fly-biting or fly-snapping are terms used to describe peculiar episodes where the dog appears to be snapping at imaginary flies. It can be a symptom of epilepsy or an eye problem.
The episodes tend to occurr sporadically, but in some cases can happen frequently throughout the day. Usually the dog is sitting quietly when the spells begin. They seem to focus on the air around them and snap out several times. Usually this is done with a very "matter-of-fact" attitude, but rarely it is done with more emotion and growling. Very often, the dog will lick at the front limbs as well. The dogs appear to be normally conscious and aware during these episodes and can sometimes be distracted out of the episode by calling their name or throwing a ball for them. Some dogs become upset by the episodes and seek out their owner during them.
Best bet is to have him checked out by your vet.

Most of them that we see around here have severe allergies to weeds, trees, grass, etc. Luxating patellas, poor temperaments, epilepsy and dental issues seem to be common in some of them too.

I have just got a Girl Jack Russel Puppy which is 9 weeks old, it is really hyper active and 4/5 times a day where it runs around the house and bites everything including my hands and feet. I really want this to stop and at the moment every time she does it i am saying no in a firm voice and staring her down but does not seem to work, is it a matter of giving it time or is there anything else i can try?
I also have a 4 year old girl who i don't want to get hurt by the dog so i need to sort it out. I also cannot walk her yet due to her not having injections so do you think this could be a factor.
Any ideas and the best way to train would be great.
I have had her first set of vacinations 2 days after i got her but the she cant have her second one's for another 2 weeks which she is booked in for. Then it another 1 weeks after this before she can go out.
Every time your puppy's teeth come in contact with your skin, yell "ouch!" in a high pitched voice and ignore her for at least ten minutes. This is how puppies learn not to bite their siblings. The high pitched yell tells your puppy that she's hurt you and ignoring her teaches her that playtime stops if she bites. Make sure no one in your family is playing too roughly with her, as that sends mixed messages. Do not hit her when she bites. This will only teach her that it's appropriate to use physical aggression on anyone lower in the pack than you and that hands are bad things that should be avoided or bitten.
Lack of exercise could definitely be an issue. Jack Russell's are known for being particularly active dogs. Make sure she gets a lot of active indoor playtime and get her vaccinated as soon as possible.

Because of the selfishness of other family members my JRT can only get an hours walk a day from me. (i have tried to tell them to walk her) She is treated right and we all lover to to bits so please don't say get her re-homed etc. I know that jack russels need lots of exercise but is an hour enough for her?
and yes, her walks are mainly off the lead so she has a good run.
As she's off the lead she should be able to get all the exercise she needs in a hour.
