Training Jack Russells

advice re: jack russell puppies?

we have a 6 month old jack russell female puppy. she’s absolutely lovely but we are getting very frustrated with her toilet training, or lack of it. It doesn’t help as we live in a first floor flat, but she will not use the training pads and continues to wee anywhere, especially in the bedroom. Can anyone help please with this and any other advice re: disciplining/training jack russell puppies. Thank You All.

I understand what you are going through. I have a 5 month old jack russell and until a month ago he too was not toilet trained and me and my boyfriend we at the end of our tether. We live in a 3rd floor flat.

The way we have managed to train him is through very very hard work im afriad. My boyfriend works from home so is with him all day. When he is awake my boyfriend had to watch him all the time and look out for any small sign that he wanted to go toilet. These signs involved sniffing the floor, crouching down slightly, runing around frantically and a few more (im sure you have seen some of these). The min he saw our pup do any of this he said to him: “come on walkies” and picked him up - put on his lead and took him outside. Most of the time our puppy would not go to the toilet outside and saved it for when he got back in. We never told him off just ignored him if he had an accident (which in the beggining was all the time). But we presisted until one day he did go outside cause my boyfriend had been going back and forth for about and hour and the pup was desperate by then. We praised him soooo much and gave him soo many treats.

After that he started to do it outside more requently thought still did have many accidents. As time went on he did it more and more outside and we always praised him when he did. Now 4 weeks later he barks at the door to go out for toilet.

Yes there are the occasional accicdents too but overall it has worked.

It is hard work but it will be so worth it in the end. Its made our lives much easier now he is going outside. You just need to dedicate yourself to him and go out back and forth.

Another tip is the first place our pup did toilet outside - we took him to the spot again and again so it became his spot to begin with until he was confident enough to do it elsewhere.

Good luck and i know you can do it

how much chocolate does it take to kill a pug?

my three month old pug just got a hold to some chocolte that my jack@ss sister left on the ground, it was half of a slim fast chocolate bar. my pup is only like ten pounds and im afraid he'll die

My pug got a hold of a brownie yesterday, and she's only 12lbs. She's fine.

Where can I find a Pinky and the Brain costumes for my pets? ?

Looking for two pet costumes for my Jack Russell Terrier and my Beagle/Collie Mix dogs. I am hoping to find a Pinky and a Brain costumes because they both look and act like these characters.

I checked eBay for dog costumes and 13 pages came up. Unfortunately, there are no Pinky and the Brain, but there are some other really cute ones.

Good luck!

jack russell terrier and parson russell terrier.is it the same dog but with different name?

is jack russell and parson russell the same dog breed??? or is there something different between them ???

i ve seen a lot of jack russells and ive seen 2 different coats smooth and wire/broken coat

im looking into getting a new dog i have a 4 year old clumber and 16 month old irish setter and im looking for a dog that will enjoy long walks lots of time playing in the garden

i am considering buying another clumber or setter but im also looking into russell terrier

In the US the Parson Russell Terrier is the name of the breed and the Jack Russell Terrier is just a type of Parson Russell Terrier. In other countries they are considered different breeds. In the US, Parson Russells conform to the breed standard. Jack Russells are just Parson Russells with shorter legs. Parsons can come in smooth or wire coats. Since Jacks are just a type of short Parsons they come in the same coat types as well.

I think in some countries like Australia, the Jack Russell is recognized as its own separate breed.

My Springers' best bud is a Jack Russell. Parson Russell terriers are a very intelligent and energetic breed. I think it would get on well with your dogs.

I've noticed that you've been searching for a companion for your two dogs for a while. Have you finally settled with this breed?

How can I stop the grass burning when my two lady dogs wee on it?

I have two lady dogs, jack-russell /Shi-zu cross, and when they wee on my lawn it causes the grass to burn. I’ve tried giving them supplements with their dinner but that doesn’t seem to have worked. I looked on the internet and one website suggested it was because the wee is acid and so burns the grass.

Is there a way to stop this from happening?

What causes it is the nitrogen (plants like it but in small doses) in their urine. You really can’t feed them anything to change it.

See link for the long story.

“Lawn burn, when mild, will often repair itself over time, especially in the case of the warm-season turf grasses that spread by stolons and rhizomes. Dark green spots and taller grasses may remain for several weeks. Sodding can be a quick way to patch severely damaged individual areas that would otherwise be invaded by weeds.”

I need a good dog toy for my 2 year old Jack Russell Terrier?

My Jack Russell Terrier is a very enthusiastic chewer and I would like to find some dog toy that will take her at least a day or so to destroy. She tends to swallow a bit of the toy, so preferably something safe to eat.

I know the feeling! This may not be the answer for a chew toy, but my 2 JRT's love this. I put a hard rubber ring on the end of a bungee cord, attach to a rope, and hang from a tree. It is just at a level they can jump up and grab it in their mouths. They hang (bouncing all around) growl, swing, and as I call it, do their Elvis impressions. It is the funniest thing you have ever seen and it uses up both their energy and chewing tendencies at once. They love it.

What is the best dog food for Jack Russel terriers and why; where can it be purchased?

Both of my JRT's are 1-2 years old and get a reasonable amount of exericse each day, but both are gaining too much weight. They have been eating IAMS lamb and rice almost exclusively since they were pups.

I am the wrong one to ask.. I think that Eukaneuba is the best dog food for ANY dog.

Do u know a Norwich Terrier Breeder?

Im looking to get a dog for my b'day…. i think i might go with Norwich Terrier but do u know any breeders that live in Adelaide SA. and also if u know how much they are.
or if you no a friend.

There are only 400 or FEWER Norwich a year, coast to coast in the whole US.
FAR fewer in OZ. There's only one I can think of in NZ & she imported from here & UK.

CALL your local kennel club!
Start saving $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ now.

Norwich are NEVER dumped in pounds!!! The club "rescue" chair for the US sent a buyer to me cuz there are NONE in rescue.

The JRT mutts pictured are NOTHING like Norwich.

Traing a parson terrier to use a litter box?

My family and i just got female parson terrier who is 2 months old.. and we have been taking her out every hour but where we live it's been very cold this month it ranges from minus 20- 45 degrees celcuis..
the dog gets really cold so it doesnt do all it;s buisness when it's outside and had an acciedent in her bed

we heard you could traing dogs to use the litter box.. how do we go about doing this? this would only be for the cold winter months

We have used litter box training with our puppies with great success. It's great when they are really young and, as in situations like yours, where the cold weather makes housebreaking difficult.

You basically follow the same steps you would for housebreaking but take them over to the litter box instead of taking them outside. We use the Second Nature Litter and litter box. The nice thing about this litter is that when it's warmer you can take a handful of it outside and put it on the grass where you want your pup to potty and they will quickly associate the smell.

Good Luck!
