and a Parson Russell?
It has always confused me. Some say just the name has changed while others say they are different dogs/breeds.
The Parson Russel terrier is a taller, more square dog, while the Russell terrier is shorter, and longer than it is tall.
Note that the Parson Russell is an AKC accepted breed, and the Russell terrier is in the FSS of the AKC, on its way to being an excepted breed. AFAIK, the Russell terrier is the same as the Jack Russell terrier, but there is a problem with the AKC using the "Jack Russell" name, due to the parent breed clubs, etc.
From the American Russell Terrier web site:
"Controversy of the name Parson Russell Terrier, Jack Russell Terrier, and Russell Terrier
The Russell Terrier originated in England but was never recognized as an official breed in the UK. Australia is designated as country of development for the Russell Terrier. In Australia and Europe with the FCI countries the Russell Terrier is known as the Jack Russell Terrier. Due the conflicting use of the name by the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America "JRTCA" in the US the name can not be utilized for the Russell Terrier in the US. The AKC Russell Terrier is the same as the Australian FCI Jack Russell Terrier. The AKC Russell Terrier is not the same as the Jack Russell Terrier in the US and must be considered a distinctly separate breed due to the development of the "JRTCA" Jack Russell Terrier regardless of height. The "JRTCA" followed England's recognition of the Jack Russell Terrier type not Australia. The Jack Russell Terrier in Australia and the FCI Jack Russell Terrier in Europe is maintained as a distinctly separate breed from the AKC Parson Russell Terrier, the "JRTCA" Jack Russell Terrier in the US and the Jack Russell Terrier in England. (Also see: Education)."
Add: they started out as the same breed, but different parent breed clubs in different countries started allowing the registration/breeding of dogs outside of the breed standard, and/or changed the breed standard to include these dogs. That's why the "traditional" type is the square, longer-legged terrier (the "Parson" type), as this is body shape conforms to the standard of the British breed club. The shorter body type was developed, and since they do not conform to the standard, my guess is that the breeders of those dogs formed their own breed club, called the Jack Russell terrier in the US. So basically, they are all the same dog, with different size ranges called different "breeds", and the different names are more due to politics of the kennel clubs and parent breed clubs than any true distinction between the types. That's my theory, anyway

My Jack Russell chews on anything rough or textured is their a reason and is there any way to stop him?
If he's a puppy, it's probably because he's teething. It's normal. But to stop him, you have to tell him "no" and take the thing away, and then give him a toy that's his and praise him when he takes it in his mouth. You have to repeat over and over, and eventually he'll understand he's only allowed to chew his toys.

AND is it possible to tell if a JRT puppy will grow up and have a beard?

what are the characteristics of a jack russel terrier
Very very high energy…needs a lot of play time. Feisty and/or aggressive with other dogs sometimes. May try to kill small animals.

I bought a Gentle Leader for my 7 month old pup.my dog gets so spastic with this thing on he shakes head he walks sideways he rolls around he wont walk he trys to bite it ….Its miserable it makes me miserable and him miserable…How can i get him to walk normally with it
I would start giving him treats while you put it on and while you’re walking to show him that it is a good thing. You could also do as others said and put it on him for a few minutes a day while you’re in the house and give him treats and play with it so he associates it with good things. It probably isn’t hurting him, he is just annoyed that he can’t get it off. I wouldn’t ever use a prong collar on my dogs, because they learn not to pull by getting poked in the neck with two metal points which to me is inhumane.

if you get one, make sure you have a place where it can run and get exercise. they have sooooo much energy and they are tough. if you have a short temper towards dogs though, i wouldn't recommend getting one. they are hard headed somtimes. the love attention though. one time we had one it he chased cars. well one day he got hit by a car by two of the wheeles. he got right back up and started chasing the car again! that goes to show how hard headed they are. lol.

I have Jack-Russel and a Pitt Bull and they seem to be a little too playful. The Pit likes to bite on the Jack Russel neck and I think that's too rough for a little Jack- Russel. And also, the Pitt is 11x bigger than the Jack-Russel
If they havent drawn blood on each other and dont scream, yelp, cry or whine. They are just playing. If the Jack Cant handle it he will let everyone know. Though its not good behavior to let ANY DOGS behavior become to dominant or too rough, regardless of the breeds. Teach both dogs to obey the NO command so when you think its too rough you tell them no and separate them for a while. Since if the Jack thinks its had enough and it starts a REAL fight, It doesnt have much of a chance against the other dogs power and bite.
