When people come over, our dog barks, and growls, and nips he is loving and cuddly with our immediate family. It doesn't even make a difference when our other dog (jack/pug mix) is friendly and cuddly with anyone who comes in the house.I have tried to have the person offer treats, and he takes the treat but doesn't warm up to others. He is such a great dog with us, and I want others to love him too!
I think u should take him to behavior classes. Behavior classes can usually cure this problem.

Is there any logical reason for this?
The eating of non-food objects (by dogs, cats, or people) is called pica, and it is not all that uncommon, especially the "dog eating rocks" type.
If the puppies are super-young, they are exploring. Their mouths are their hands, so they are eating whatever they find (including poop if you don't watch them!) Our English mastiff used to eat the quikcrete off of the patio (!), but this stopped after a about 2 months.
If they are older now and have not stopped, your friend should look at the behavior in its context to try and stop it. What happens right before the rock eating? Right after? The dogs may want attention, or they may be nervous about something in their environment. Once you figure out what is causing this behavior, you can correct it.
Have your friend teach the dogs other outdoor activities like fetch or swimming (depending on the environment). In addition, the dogs MUST be taught to come when called and to stay. These commands will not only make them stop eating rocks, but could very well save the dogs' lives! (Think about a dog taking off across a busy street or into the woods after a squirrel.)

Just got a Jack Russell puppy could you give me ideas of what to feed him, how much and when? Is it true they enjoy raw chicken wings?
Thanks Meg, could I ask how often you walk your dog and for how long?
I feed my Jack Russell "Innova". It is a little more expensive than other foods but well worth it. ….it has all natural ingredients. You could start on the puppy and then switch to adult once he is older. My dog does really well on it.
A puppy should eat about three times a day. I fed my pup around 7am, noon, and 5pm. But as long as you are consistent, you can work it around your schedule!!! When they are around 1yr old, you can switch to adult food and after about 6 months or so…you can gradually start feeding them twice a day.
A nice thing about Innova is that they also tell you what quantity you should give your dog based on 1. Weight and also 2. Activity Level.
Dogs can eat raw foods….but certain cooked bones are not good because they can splinter. There are other bones they can have
Good luck with your puppy…..they are crazy but such fun dogs. I'm actually getting another Jack Russell puppy next week!!!
Here is the website for INNOVA: http://www.naturapet.com/brands/innova.asp

I’ve been reading about jogging with your dog and it always says something about not jogging with smaller breeds. But does that exclude Jack Russell Terriers?
(My JRT is 8 months old)
You can jog with your dog, but not yet. Wait until he’s fully grown (with a small breed 12-14 months should be OK) to avoid putting too much stress on his growing joints. Then slowly work up time and distance and speed.

I am aware that jack russells have an instinct of hunting rodents/foxes/badgers but wondered if i could train a young pup (8 wks) to be with the two guinea pigs i own? if introduced as soon as he comes home? and he is half german spitz.
or is it just a big no no?
It’s really going to depend on the individual pup. You do have a good chance if you are able to be a strong figure of discipline (JRT’s specifically can be very hard-headed). If you can show the puppy that the g-pigs are “above” him, and not to be messed with, it can work.
JRT’s are not supposed to be good with cats either, but mine loves cats and kittens, and has never tried to hurt any. I got her at around 9 weeks, and she was introduced to my cats the same day.
